run seafoam because it could be carbon buildup in piston bores but I meant to put try atf first then if that dont work try the seafoam. when my advance was sticking I tried the atf in the filter about five different times and it never worked. Finally quit messing around and pulled the cover and drained diesel, washed with b12, and filled with atf. worked the hell out of throttle linkage once I got the cover back on and then fired it up and let it run about 5-10 sec. shut it down and it has been gravy since.

Hey guys...if my health permits,
I hope to fill the top of the IP with ATF tomorrow.
Should I do it on a dead cold engine, fire it up for 45 seconds and while it's on "cold advance" shut it off for the night or...should I do it on a 'warm' engine, fire it up, run for 45 seconds then turn it off and let it sit over night?
Make any difference?

QUESTION > > > will the advance piston move when manually opperating the throttle or is that controlled by fuel pressure?

I would make sure the engine is nice and hot before doing your additive treatment. Additives tend to do a better job when the engine/fuel system is hot in my opinion. I had the same issue that you may be experiencing. My timing advance plunger was sticking in my IP last year. I went ahead and warmed up the engine driving around town, shut off, removed old fuel filter, installed new filter that was topped off with pure seafoam, started it up for 2 minutes, shut off overnight.......problem fixed the next day after I gave it a few drag runs down the road.
IMO, I wouldn't take the top of the IP off. Seafoam will work a hell of alot better than atf. I have tried both more than once.

Hammerdown - go to this thread http://www.oilburners.net/forums/showthread.php?27919-Fuel-shut-off-solenoid-replacement-Stanadyne-DB2before you pull the top cover on your pump. This shows the position the FSS arm should be in. I would also have the air cleaner off and have a board or heavy rug nearby to block off the intake in the event of a runaway. I make it sound more dangersaous than it probably is, but it pays to be prepared. If you position the FSS as shown in the linked thread, you will be fine. If you don;t feel like messing with the top cover, put your cleaner in the filter, fire up the truck to get some into the IP, then shut her down and let soak. Everybody has their favorite cleaner, and I have had good results with DieselKleen.

moving the throttle with the engine stopped wont move the advance piston. With the lid off of the pump though, you can manually move the cam ring wich will move the advance piston. anything you pour in the top of the pump will only only get to one end of the piston, and only if the engine is run.

What I have done in the past, with a low tank, is overdose with conditioner. If it doesnt give up in a few days, you can manually operate the advce rocker over and over quickly (with cold advance activated also) and it will usually unstick. This will usually get some more time out of one, especially if you keep up on additives. If your advance is actually sticking, the only real cure is a proper rebuild. (or lock the advance out)

My truck has this same problem also and I run a baby moose BUT it also did it with all the other pumps I put on before buying the baby moose. I dont think this is a pump issue we are having, I think it's injectors!

A while back, I bought a set of new Stanadyne injecotrs off ebay and when I installed those, the truck ran even worse, so I put my Delphi bb's back in.

My truck runs great when its cold and sounds great but when it warms up, it idles rough and I get the extra noises that hammerdown is refering to. Once again though, I honestly dont think its a pump or advance problem.

rough running is not going to have anything to do with the timing advance, and dumping ATF into the top of the pump will ONLY clean the governor and return check valve. NOTHING ELSE! I highly advise against removing the top cover simply because your going to introduce a potential leak by disturbing the gasket. Filling the fuel filter is a MUCH better way of doing it. Also, I would not "dump out" a fuel filter. Doing so risks getting dirt into the clean side. It is much wiser to just replace the filter with a new one. More than likely what is going on, is you have an injector or two that is sticking. I seriously doubt it's a pump problem, as they tend to be much more consistent and not subject so much to temperature or the day. Fuel can and always will be an issue, but from the sound of it Ray, your experiencing a temperamental problem due to the truck sitting overnight or otherwise. This is definitely an injector issue.

I think that anything put in the top will get to the end of the advance piston that housing pressure acts on. Maybe I am wrong??

UPDATE...
I removed the filter and (didn't pour) but siphoned out the fuel, refilled with PS, started it then and let it soak overnight.
Then, added a triple dose of PS in the tank and took it to a local street and made a couple 1/8 mile type passes. (I didn't like taking the cream-puff up to 3000 rpm) ... but hammer it I did :backoff

The result > > > > > sounds tight and right ;Sweet

Admittedly, I've gotten away from using PS in favor of TCW3...but with the sloooow local stop/go driving I do, I'll be getting back to regularly dosing it with 1-oz PS to 3-gal of fuel with the occasional HAMMERDOWN!

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions.
