Stupid tax

I almost hate to admit this but I bought a new set of Ford door looks for my 91 because it didn't come with a door key. I got them in and disconnected the door lock actuators (different problem for another time) but I have lost the new keys. . Does anyone know if I can take the numbers off the tumbler sets and order keys? They were NOS replacements from NPD. I have torn the garage and house apart.

Check how much a local locksmith would charge. I have heard they have a key blank, and they can insert it in the tumbler and then pull it out, and by the marks on it determine how to grind a new key. If you took the tumbler out and went to their shop, maybe they would not charge too much, or maybe they could do it from the numbers you gave them like you mentioned.

Where would you order the keys from if you could get the numbers? Is there a place that grinds and sells just keys?

That's called impressioning, it's kind of an art form, but doable. However, if you have the tumblers out and can take them into the locksmith shop, they can simply mesure the pins and grind a key accordingly. Much cheaper than having a key impressioned.

Yeah that's pretty much it. Takes about 5 minutes and your done. I did 25-30 a week when I was at a lock shop.

A reputable lock shop will make a new key for it. I had to take one of my atv's to my local lock shop and he put a blank key in the ignition, wiggled it around, and filed the key down until it worked. He charged me about $30 for it. Just make sure you have a few copies made

If you KNOW for sure that it is the original door/ lock cylinder, then you can take the VIN and proof of ownership to the dealer or some full service locksmith shops and they can cut you a key from that information, but at the rate ford door lock cylinders poop out, its anyones guess if the thing came with the truck or not, and if it didnt' , youre out the cash.

Tried that with my truck, dealer said they couldnt make keys from vehicles that old from the VINs anymore (for my 91)

The only manufacturer that keeps the old stuff in the system is Toyota. Ford is fairly worthless.

If you have numbers stamped on the locks call a locksmith and tell them your dilemma and ask them if those are valid key codes. If they are have them cut a key from code and try it. Otherwise pull the lock and take it in.

Thanks for the reply. I know for certain they are not the originals as I just replaced them with a NOS replacement kit. Interestingly enough, all the older stuff was made by Briggs and Stratton. Fun fact. I didn't know it. I have the key tag that was attached to the ignition keys but I don't know if it is a matched set and that tag covers everything or if that is just ignition. The door keys didn't have one of the little round tags with them.

Guess I'll keep looking for now, but I may call a locksmith and see what the damage would be. Always something. As soon as I tear it apart and take the locks to somebody, I'll find the keys.

Briggs and Stratton was a major OEM supplier for keys and locks for a very long time. Strattec does it now. I can't remember what year ford went to one key fits all but do you remember if it was different keys for door and ignition?

Yep. Its the old style two key system. I think they went to 1 key in 92.

Those honestly should be a 1 key system if you bought them for your year truck. We have an 89 at home that had ignition key door locks. I bought a ignition switch door lock set for an 87-91 a while back to put into the brown truck and they were a 1 key system. NOS Ford parts.

the trucks come randomly either with a one or 2 key system. my 91 was a 2, it is now a 1 with repinned 79 door locks. the 88 is getting a 1 key set of nos that u haul had. 30 bucks, love it.
then im going to get one truck cut on one side of the key and the other on the other, I HATE carrying a *** of keys.

I now have a four key truck. After it was stolen, I had to replace the ignition switch and driver's door lock because they were destroyed by the thieves. I have not yet gotten around to replacing the passenger side door lock to match. The fourth key is for the tonneau cover. My keychain is getting intense.
