Would you rather have a T19 or E4od ?

I currently have all three in the driveway... :sly

My van is a E4Ød, I hate the way it shifts... really soft and squishy-like. The torque converter will unlock every time you take your foot off the pedal, and then lock once you start pulling heavy. I live in a very hilly area and I can just picture all the heat and friction going on inside the case. I am planning on beefing it up, re-cal valve body, coolers, etc...

The black truck is a T19, honestly if the speed limit were still 55 I would have no problem with that one. Half of my commute home is up and over a 1800 ft hill around twists and turns, the T19 was great because in fourth I wouldn't have to shift at all the whole way home, unless some SOB cut me off...

Lots of awesome has been said about the ZF5, and it really is the cold hard truth. It's a well built manual transmission with overdrive. I've had my truck in deep snow, ice, long trips with the 5er, the ZF is really a good compromise. The DMF is a miserable brutal joke, but there are work-arounds for that...

Back to the question at hand... Guillotine or Firing squad. :D

What is your preference and requirements for the truck? Hauling heavy around the farm; T-19. Commuting to and from work empty with an hour plus drive; E4OD. Haul heavy on the weekends and travel for work; ZF-5. This is about the easiest way I can think to simplify what each transmission is suited for in my opinion. Personal choice will dictate what you like. I have 2 half tons; one with a E4OD, one with a NP-435. I love driving the stick everywhere, I like control of my truck:sly. I notice the power difference every time I switch trucks; the auto revs way up and goes no where fast, shift at the dumbest road speeds, hunts for gears with a strong head wind. The auto is getting dropped for a ZF next summer.....

I love the T-19 but of course it all depends on how much empty highway driving you do. If you go through all the work of a swap, then I think its obvious to try and get a ZF. But for a truck that already has a T-19, I would leave it alone. They have never given me any grief.

I think i could use some of that chrome. The truck looks in pretty decent shape from the pictures

What's it like driving the auto with the od off all the time? Isn't that 1:1 ratio like 4th in the stick?
I keep the O/D on. It wasn't hunting for gears or acting up at all, it really surprised me.

Body in decent shape? Hard to tell from the pics.

I'll be in the market for front fenders, front bumper, hood and bed in the near future.
It doesn't look too bad. It's not rotten from what I can tell. The interior is toast ..

In my f250 I went from e4od and 4.11 to t-19 and 3.54. It made a real truck out of it. It seems to tow much easier now. It costs LOTS to make and e4od bulletproof, a t-19 is dang near free. With 4.11 a 4 spd would suck, but 3.54 works just fine.
What are your rpm's at 55 MPH?

^My trucked is my daily driver, weekend hauler. I won't be hauling anything much heavier than this load.

Any O/B member is welcome to come pick it apart. All light items are free, heavier items I would need scrap price for.

I would love a zf but I don't have the money for one right now. I was only considering the t19 because it is free. I will probably just pull it and toss it in the barn as a back up. Ill just throw everything for the swap with it so I have something to fall back on.

Damn that looks like a clean body to me. Anyway I did the E40D to T-19 swap. My E40d was toast and needed gone through which is too much money. I then added a US gear to the back of the t-19. The t-19 is a cheap transmission to keep running and bullet proof also. The lack of O/D is a killer though. Even with 3.55 gears OD is nice. With the US-gear I basically have a 6 speed because I split 3rd gear and 4th gear.

I have a ZF5 in my 93 and like it a lot.

You silly west coasters have no idea what beat and junk look like out here in the rust belt.... I would say that with commuting and "Light" hauling the E4OD would be a good choice until you score a ZF. This is just my $.02 though.

I admit I am spoiled with rust free stuff :D. I didn't mean to say it was beat, just neglected and in need of a lot of work. I hate scrapping these things but if I didn't it would sit in my yard which I can't have. I do try to tale everything I can off for spares though " lol. My gf loves that part. :D. She thinks I'm a parts horder, but really I just love spares and being able to help people out when they need a part that I have. And when I'm into the truck for free ( after it's scrapped) I can give the parts away to whoever needs them for free. :)

The other side of the bed looks about the same but is missing the lower chrome and has a dent that would pop out super easy. It looks like a heavy person just leaned on it wrong :D.

Homeless,
My question about over drive was regarding how the manual would feel at speed. If you try driving with the od off, it would be similar Rpms as 4th gear on the manual transmission. Make sense?

I see .. Well if that's the case I will definitely stick to the e4od :D

I had a truck with a t19 and I did like it, but it had 4.10's and I sold it before I had a chance to put many miles on it.

I've got you beat. I have a c6 and 4.11s. Governor limit is right around 70. Would be much better with Oregon's speed limit. People do nit drive 55 in California
