Howdy! I have been reading a lot here, and have gone back about 60 pages so far and figured I would say hello.

My name is Tim, I live in the mountains of NC, and am a fanatic for older diesel engines. I have 20 years experience working on them for the Army Reserve, and have been driving them in one form or another for a long time. I am also an ASE certified diesel tech, although that was done just for the Army side. I run a military surplus store for my regular job.

And this project truck is mostly for the store- a truck I can take on the road to pick up stuff I buy. It is a really rough looking 91 F350 Crew Cab dually, but it has a 7.3, ATS turbo, ZF5, 4.10 rear end and a CM flatbed. Only 157,000 miles on it as well. It runs and drives very well, and should be ideal for this. It has all the options I wanted, and the issues are all cosmetic or minor.

My plans are new paint, fix the body work, clean the interior and find a set of newer front seats that will for for more comfort. Any suggestions on what donor vehicles are good for seats?

Some folks say I am crazy and just get a Powerstroke or newer truck. But I don't need any more power than the IDI will have, and I like that I can carry a starter, alternator, IP and lift pump and essentially have all I need to fix it with me short of complete engine failure.

My old work van was a 90 7.3, and the van fell apart around the motor. But I still have it, and now am going to part it out and keep all the accessory parts, and I have a core IP sitting here, so I already have pretty much every spare I need once I get the IP rebuilt to feel comfortable driving anywhere.

Hey Chief welcome aboard! There have been a few people to add more comfortable seats which might not be bad since you want to be able to drive it long distances. I hope some of them will come in and give you some ideas. As far as power, you can wring a little more out of the IDI without compromising reliability. How much is a function of your fab skills and even at that is a matter of hot controversy among diesel enthusiasts. It's pretty safe to say you could upgrade that factory turbo and add a DPS or Moose fuel system and a few other goodies and get close to or above 200RWHP without compromising that rock solid simplicity and reliability. Always great to see people trying to keep these old trucks going and keeping them nice.

Heres another welcome to the forum. An upgrade to the turbo would be the exhaust wheel housing providing its not already done for you. Also look at the down pipe. If it the factory one with the smashed area get rid of it for the better, larger one. No a no cost upgrade is to take out the muffler and just run a straight pipe. A 4 inch upgrade is all you really need. It connects directly to the down pipe with a adapter. then runs out the rear. The sound is not loke you might think. The turbo chops up the sound signiture so weel. You only really hear the exhaust noise when the turck is working hard... Then all thruck enfines are loud because they are pulling heavy or working hard. You right foot determines when tha exhaust sound note is loud...:sly:angel: As for other cheap upgrades maybe the injection pump needs to be rebuilt. There are a couple of members here that do stuff like that. A matched set of BB code injectors is going to really help to because the fuel is measured the same in each cylinder. Then getting the engine properly timed by someone you know and trust. Many shops will not time these engines because they don't have the tools or meters. I rent the meters with the proper tools for this timing. Its been very well accepted across the US so far. The Fee is $60.00 and I pay the shipping to you. Take this information to the pm and we can talk if your really interested. I have made up several viedos of this simple timing of our engines and can answer any questions you might have about this. Typ4 sells a great regrind cam thats really great down low with torque above what we have stock. A new cam is around $800.00 from International and around $200.00 from typ4... Cheaper but much better both ways. You really don't need to replace the lifters either because they are needle bearing rollers. You can upgrade the springs to the Comp Cam 910 springs. You don't even need to remove the heads for this. Rotunda made a spring compresser tool that I have and so do many others. I will loan it to you but will not rent or sell it. It means that much to have a tool when you need it or someone else needs it. These engines pistons miss hitting the heads by about 42 thousands at top dead center. So you bring up a piston to tdc and easily replace the springs or seals without dropping a valve into the cylinder. Hope this helps you along the way...

Welcome to the site.
U have two things I wNt right there. A crew cab and a five speed:)
It sounds like you have a good plan there. What color do you plan on painting it?
I really like whites and gunmetal colors on these trucks.
As far as the seats. I've seen people take the seats out of a 99-03 superduty and put them in. Not sure how they did ittho.
Dsl dog catcher? Has a write up of putting seats from a f150 into his truck.
Sorry I'm not more help.

Flex-steel used to make some nice seats aftermarket and I have found a few sets in junk yards already. In fact I just saw a beautiful blue one in awesome shape for a hundred bucks(in a ford too). Unfortunately my current trucks interior is grey. Im not sure if if the company is still around or not.

If your willing to spend the coin, this place has some nice stuff http://www.discountvantruck.com/discounttruckaccessories/truck.htm

It will be either a gunmetal or an olive-gray color.

I really like the 40/20/40 seats with the fold down console in the middle found in 94-96 F150's and 94-97 F250's and F350's. I had a '95 with those seats. They are really comfortable and should be a direct bolt in. My '94 has a bench seat and I would like to swap a set of the 40/20/40 Ford seats if I ever find a nice set. If I am remembering correctly some of them were power adjustable and all had power lumbar.

I've driven by Clyde many times on my way to Black Mountain.

I got two seats out of an 89 dodge van to put in my truck. I made some minor modifications and used two pieces of 3/4" tube steel to bolt them in. They aren't perfect, but they are comfortable. I really like how they absorb the impact that an unloaded 1 ton Ford transmits on uneven surfaces. I think I paid $20 each for them but had to look at about every truck and van in the parts yard to find them.

They are a direct bolt in, I did that with my truck.
