Today was the first complete fill up of my new TDI (my daily driver). This is roughly 75% in city, 25% highway at 65mph. No AC use. I drive this car 6-7 days a week, and its taken me a month on this tank...so you can see just how "city" this tank is.

558.6 miles. 13.250 (might have been able to squeeze a little more in there, but I could see fuel in the filler neck and it was raining ). Call it 42mpg. I'm feeling that stirctly all highway low 50's would be easy to achieve (considering our auto goes from 35mpg driving like mine does, to 49mpg driving to Houston and back).

Our Jetta is a 5 speed and we consistently get 44 in mixed driving. Long freeway trips will get into the low 50s. Best tank ever was 57, but that was pre-ULSD fuel.

Good thing these get the mileage they get- the diesel premium is getting ridiculous. Its getting to be $0.85 a gallon more than regular around here.

The difference in mileage on mine was drastic! My best tank, with the auto tranny, was 32MPG... This last tank, with the 6spd manual, was 39.6... That was 513 miles of me driving the living snot out of it! When I filled it up, I still had better than 1/4 of a tank left! Once we're done with winter fuel, I expect it to get even better!

You should be able to get 15.4 or so gallons into that car. You just have to push the little breather button down in the filler neck. I've been getting 48 with 90% in town driving and around 54 when I drive highway more often.

Believe me, I feel your pain I've been drooling over a TDI ever since 2000 or so (in other words, when I became mature enough to recognize the value of a vehicle that got better than 15 mpg )..."only" took 11 years for me to get my hands on one. Your time will come

Instead of pushing on the vent button every time, why not try the ventectomy? Took me all of five minutes and let me get my fuel tank's full capacity...

X2 on that! That was the first thing I did to my car...took 5 minutes or so (not including looking for tools ) and fueling the car is night-and-day better! I just wish I could do something similar to my truck...I keep a close eye on fuel mileage with both vehicles, so I always fill to the brim. Takes maybe 5 minutes with the car, and can take 45 minutes with the truck

Since you are in commiefornia, I guess you can't get away with ditching the rollover valve in favor of a half inch or larger vent?
I've read that the obs psd trucks had a larger rollover valve that works much better. You might try that, if there is any truth to it.
I put a one inch vent on mine and ran it up between the bed and cab and can fill it to the top without any issues so far.
I am thinking of scaling it back to 1/2" though because it has started rubbing when the frame flexes any at all.
I have a hole in my drive that I really need to fill and when backing through it I can hear the hose protesting.

Actually, California doesn't do vehicle inspections for private vehicles in the same way that many northeastern states do. The closest thing CA has is smog emissions checks, for 1974 or later gasoline vehicles and 1999 or later diesel vehicles, and those really only check the exhaust emissions and makes sure that all legally required smog equipment's present...they don't do an overall inspection as a matter of routine (they will do an overall inspection if a vehicle's imported from another state, and IIRC there's a more in-depth inspection when you apply for a salvage title; towcat would have more info on that).

So, even if ditching the rollover valve is illegal, there's really no way one would be caught unless the vehicle rolled over and fuel spilled out.

As to modifying the tanks on our trucks, I've heard a few options, but I haven't heard much about how effective they are. I should do some more research into it...

I can tell you for sure that ditching the rollover and putting in a bigger vent hose will make it work.
