I had to take the 86 in for a smog test. I guess it was an opacity test, max allowable percentage was 55% and I blew 57.8%. I'll admit the truck wasn't very warm, I started it up after sitting all day, drove it about 2 miles and let it idle for 20 minutes before testing. The tester said getting it good and hot out on the freeway would probably push it into passing range. I'm doubting his knowledge of diesels though since he tried to attach a probe to a spark plug wire. Do you think that would help though? The pump is ****** but my timing may be a tad retarded. I was also debating adding a can of seafoam to the fuel tank but cant really see how that would help with an opacity test.

Yes, getting it hot should help some. Be sure your air filter is clean/new as well. What is the test like? Is it a snap test where they stomp the pedal and run it to governed speed?

I just stabbed the throttle 3 times, just long enough to pass 2000rpms each time. It even allowed for 3 clean out snaps before the actual test. Altogether I did 6 snap tests, the first one was 89% and they kept going down each time.

I think getting it fully warmed up will really bring that opacity down quite a bit. I'd recommend some B100 but that would probably already turn to gel in your tanks this time of year. You could turn the fuel down some, but I think she was just a little cold. Beyond that it's probably down to weepy injectors or something.

Get the truck hot on the highway first, block the radiator with cardboard if it's too cold out. Get ya a jumper wire to go from your battery to the cold advance, hot wire the advance on a block away, do the test. You're less than 3% away as is, so this would probably do it.

Just removing the airfilter would do it at the point your at. For some reason IDI's fail the snap test in NJ all the time. I have had to do some serious pump tweaking in the past to get them through. Youre close though.

What weight range truck are you talking about?. In NJ any diesel vehicle that is less than 18,000 GVWR is exempt from a smog check or opacity check. Any diesel powered vehicle over 10,000 GVWR is self inspection. It is that reason I do not even have an inspection sticker on my truck.

All heavy-duty diesel vehicles 18,000 pounds GVWR or more are required to be tested for smoke emissions annually at a licensed Diesel Emission Inspection Center (DEIC) within 90 days of your vehicle's registration or renewal.

I even pulled in a roadside inspection for Diesels one time and they waved me through along with looking at me kind of funny why I even stopped.

Seriously? Turn your pump back down the three flats you have it turned up, drive it until it's completely up to operating temperature (minimum 45 min.) then just around the corner from the inspection station before you go in, pop the hood, pull the air filter and throw it in a bag 'till your done. Guess I don't have to tell you to put it back on ASAP.

I say, turn the pump down, and advance the timing a little?

Good long warmup should do wonders.

so close.
likely just a good 10 more mins warm up time would have cleaned up the last 3% even.
since it got so close just driving 2 miles,im not sure id touch anything at all.
go give her a good 30 mins out on the interstate at 65.she'll probably pass with flying colors.

my truck will make my eyes water inside 2 minutes hooking up the chipper letting her warm up.
makes me want to hold my breath every time too lol.:D
no such thing going on after driving her for a bit.

Wrong truck, LOL I'm testing my 86, not my 93. The pump on the 86 has never been opened.

I will check the air filter, cant remember what it looks like right now. I'll run it on the freeway as well. I have 5 more chances to pass, gonna try it again on saturday. No point in trying after work, due to the traffic I will never get any speed to heat it up.
