Oil change nightmare

You might try this, when oil is hot loosen filter 1/2 turn, then poke hole

good thought---also--always use filter wrench--at the BASE of the filter--not the other end--very seldom will you tear the metal case out of the base---

Matthias went down that road in Bowling Green. He had to change an oil filter on his truck that HE put on. I told him at the time, my rule for changing filters. You put it on as tight as you can get it with ONE hand. Unfortunately, he didn't think that was tight enough, and he used both hands. He now understands that oil filters generally stay on really good with very little torque, and follows my rule.

i use grease on the orings. fuel and oil on all my equipment here at work. never had a stuck one.

I always go with the rule that once you get it fairly tight with one hand, go 1/2 a turn more and leave it...which is pretty much the same thing you said Mel. I have NEVER had a filter stick...well, one that I put on anyways.

I have found that draining the filter if it's stuck helps out.....clean it off with brake clean, and fold a piece of sandpaper in hald, so the gritty side is on both sides.....stiuck that between the filter and band of the wrench for added bite to minimize slippage.....I learned that working on the BIG trucks when I was 19.

I don't even own a filter wrench, and I usually do 25-30 oil changes a month... There is absolutely no reason to go beyond hand tight on a filter... I do have a 12" long standard screwdriver that has never turned a screw that I use for the really stubborn stuff...

Same nonsense on my 94's first oil change by me. Ended up hammering a long screwdriver thru the side of the filter and torquing it off. Just changed mine this morning again. It didn't come off by hand but a large pair of pliers made it move ok. I always oil the oring and wipe off the face of the filter mount first. The only part that sucks is when ya get to the final thread on the filter and the danged heavy thing slips outta your hand, into the drain pot of oil and, yup, you guessed it......splashed oil all over me. I wonder if head n shoulders removes diesel engine oil in the first try....

PS.I helped a friend, he put the screwdriver through that cheap filter, he ended up tearing up the filter so bad, ho took it to a real mechanic.
