Yesterday while surfing Ebay I found some electric vacuum pumps for the psd. I remember some members wanting to change there belt driven vacuum pumps so here is your chance and really cheap too. Item number is 320229704546.

Just looked it up - think this part of the description is important:
"It will NOT work to power your brake booster - it is too small!"

i wonder if 2 of these and a large extra vacuuum chamber would be enough... kinda expensive tho.

Just looked it up - think this part of the description is important:
"It will NOT work to power your brake booster - it is too small!"

Thats an easy fix. Convert the brakes to hydraboost. Toss the belt driven pump in the trash. Might have to experiment with the C6 tranny for the folks running them.

i just really hate the idea of hydra boost.:backoff you have so many more PS hoses to rattle loose or rub and leak if you loose your any of the components you cant steer or stop :mad:. screw that!!!!!! cookoo

Tractroman, you know what's best - if using Chevy parts when you turn the wheel and step on the brakes just right you can use all your pump pressure for the brakes and have a momentary loss of power steering :D Tis a very rare situation tho, it used to take me 3-4 tries to duplicate it. That said, hydroboost makes for a much higher line pressure, so you end up with stronger brakes (vacuum boosters can only do so much). You can compensate for the lower line pressure with smaller bore master cylinder, but then you need more travel to get the right fluid displacement, so you end up with a funky pedal feel - hydroboosted brakes feel like manual brakes only much much lighter, there ain't no mush and no creeping pedal.

hydroboost brakes are far superior and u get better braking personally i would have hydro boost for all of my projects hydrolics are the way to go
no matter what if u loose a vacume pump belt or a power steering belt ur screwed either way u look at it i figure just brace your self
im switching to hydroboost soon i want the braking and the added firewall space

I use an underpowered electric vacuum pump to provide vacuum to my booster on the Rover with the 6.2 and 42's - The pedal takes a little more effort than a stock IDI system, but you know you have power brakes. It will work... my .02

Hydroboost has been around for a long time. My 79 chevy one ton truck has it. I nursed my Ford for way too many years with the vacuum booster brakes. I've lost the vacuum pump belt 2 times in 12 years and the pump once. In all that time I never lost a power steering pump or belt. Lots of street rods are using the hydroboost and it really is a better system. My line pressure has doubled and the peddle has never sank down like the old system did after you stop at a lite. I'm using the 1 5/16 inch master cylinder so that helps also. My peddle has authority when I step on it. Its as if the parking brake was not released. Its up that high and boy0o0boy does it stop fast. It will plant your face on the windshield if the seatbelt isn't on....:D Stop worrying about loosing the ps pump or trying to pannic stop and turn at the same time. In over half a million miles I have never seen or had this happen to me or anyone else driving my trucks. But only you can do whats best for you...:dunno

Hydroboost is top shelf. I'd convert the rest of my fleet if I had the coin. Like anything, if the rest of your stuff is up to ***** it will work as intended, with no degredation of steering or what not. I suspect folks who have had a negative experience with hydroboost, had a system that was not 100%. Like I've said before, I've lost 3 or 4 vacuum pumps over the years, and have never had a power steering pump failure in that same time frame. Hoses don't rattle or knock around if you do it right, and don't try to go cheap.

The only thing I've noticed with Hydroboost, and, it comes into play in some off road situations, if you are ******* the brakes, you won't have power assist on the steering, every Super Duty I've ever driven does it. Not a big deal 99% of the time, but, if you're on a steep angle off road, or maybe a steep boat ramp and you need to steer and hold the brakes, you may have some work ahead of you.

Can't you ramp up the pressure a bit? Dunno about Ford pumps, but with the Saginaws you can change the valving and it takes care of that issue, there's a company in Texas that actually makes the kits for that, too bad I don't remember who they are...

yea i have seen that two where they shim the relief valve. that ups your line pressure but i think the problem is more volume related where the pump falls behind for a very brief time.
