new member, but I am familiar with diesels, I own 4.

I have a 1989 7.3 idi f-superduty (F450?) service truck that has been sitting since 1997. I am helping to get it running to sell. it only has 13000 orig miles. And it has sat in a garage since that time.

I am getting some fuel pressure; I rigged up a fuel pressure set up. My initial test I had pressure, but my gauge wouldn't register it. M guess is that the fuel pump is bad, But i need to confirm. I am getting some fuel to the fuel filter, its' old.

The glow plugs work as they are supposed too.

Questions:
1. can I bypass the FS by putting 12v to the terminal? (it just am trying to hear it click open)
2. what is the correct fuel pressure at the Schrader valve? ( I found multiple numbers)

TIA,

NT

Proofread that please...
Crack the injector lines (a couple each side should be fine)with fully charged batteries and purge the air, if it won't , you'll be looking at delivery issues.
Hope this helps.

The answer to question #1 is yes. As for #2, I don't know of a number. As far as I know, it's done by volume. Disconnect the hard line where it goes into the filter head. As you crank the engine over with the starter, the amount of fuel that comes out during a certain amount of cranking is the test. I don't remember the number off the top of my head.
Since it's a F Superduty, it probably has a standard transmission. Not very many didn't. If you can get fuel to the injectors and it still won't start, you might be able to pull start the engine.

Thanks. I was hoping to be able to hear the FSS click. As for the fuel pump, I found info indicating that the "volume" is the requirement for a test. But, no number was given. I looked up fuel pump specs, 2 different pumps were in the NAPA / AutoZone / ORielly's catalogs. One with 7 psi output and one with 9 psi output. Both flow 30 gpm. The truck does have a 5 spd. manual trans. As for pulling it to start, I am working on this truck by myself, so that's not a possibility. If it comes down to it, I may need to drag someone to the yard to help me, to assist on a pull start.

I'm not sure I follow your first post.

but
you might just be dry.
Once you get fuel to the fuel shutoff solenoid on the ip, coming from the tank switching valve it's probably gunna fire.

Maybe gravity feed the pump?
Then you should see something like the factory quoted Statts,
Below, not sure why the quote 6.9
Its from an 88 fsm

Thanks, good information. I am headed out to the yard tomorrow. Taking a 5 gal can of diesel with me, I made up an electric fuel pump set up to feed the fuel filter housing. hopefully I can get it running and the lift pump will suck the fuel from the tank.

I wanted to update those interested in the crank / no start issue on the 1989 7.3 idi, F- Superduty.
My first test was for fuel pressure at the filter, at about 5 seconds of cranking, Fuel Pressure was at a solid 10 PSI
I removed the FSS covers and tested the FSS solenoid, it moved as it was supposed to.

I dug in deeper to the governor spring system(?). the issue was that the FSS solenoid was working but the FSS / governor arm / spring was gummed up. just a reminder, this truck has sat in a garage since 1997. I was able to free it up, reassembled and with minimal cranking, I got fuel to the injectors.

I tool a short video of the FSS system, and of the truck running. I need to break it down to share. I am posting a picture of the truck. it will be listed for sale asap. the truck has an original 12,280 miles on it.
