So I had heard recently that Napa Gold filters are no longer Wix. The last filter I put on my truck, it did say made in USA on it, so I'm sure that filter is okay.

Then I stumbled across this video that came out three months ago.

Definitely explains a few things. Looks like I'll have to request WIX specifically from now on. Just wanted to spread the knowledge.

At work we kinda got in a short firefight with our Napa, only kind of issue we have had in a while.

They stock some Baldwin stuff for us now… most Napas don’t or won’t but a few do and can. and I personally will be going with Baldwin/Hastings filters after my Napa/Wix supply that I keep on hand runs out, which won’t be long from now.

From FleetFilter.com:

There have been some online videos and discussions regarding NAPAGold filters now being made in China and hence lost the quality that the NAPAGold has been known for.

True, but that's only half the story because not all NAPAGold have had quality issues:

For decades, WIX has been the sole supplier for NAPAGold filters. In Sept 2023, NAPA partly severed their relationship with WIX and now purchases some light and heavy duty filters from a new supplier while some heavy duty part numbers come from Baldwin and Donaldson.

FLEETFILTER still buys NAPAGold directly from WIX filters as we have for 19 years. However, we may supplement our inventory with the NAPAGold made by Baldwin or Donaldson, and we advertise as such on the product pages of our website. Those are the brands we trust!

Again, FleetFilter does not stock or sell any of the "new" NAPAGold filters.

We have worked hard to build a dependable small business by selling high quality filters for low prices, but we know we cannot do that with a filter you cannot trust.

The budget Napa IDI oil filter i bought last fall, it was an old stock USA made one, despite the site advertising one made in China.

And it's not 1950 anymore.

USA made doesn't automatically mean good quality.

China made doesn't automatically mean bad quality.

I don't think it had anything to do with mann-hummel purchasing wix. IIRC wix had issues keeping napa supplied with filters during covid, and napa went to other manufacturers for certain lines/filters looking for supply. Before the announcement, the golds were never anything but wix.

I was told the wix filters had the labeling printed on the can, whereas the non-wix units used stickers.

We're a napa autocare center and stock mostly the pro-select line of the napa filters in the shop, and those were the first to be switched afaik, and that happened a few years ago already. I've seen no difference between the two manufacturers, and quality seems to be the same as we've had no change in the number of filters sent back as defective. I was worried we'd have a "fram" moment, but that hasn't been the case.

Go with napa gold, or go with wix. I don't think either is a bad filter.

Ever since Mann Hummel bought wix they haven't been worth a squat. Quality control has gone down the drain. Purolator has had quality control issues for over a decade now and they were also bought up by mann hummel. Purolator has been the supplier for Motorcraft for years. I stopped using Motorcraft filters after having cut open several with torn pleats. Like I said this issue has been going on for 10 years maybe longer now. Myself and others have tried contacting purolator about quality concerns and they deny there is any issue. You can google purolator tearing issues and it comes up on many forums so its a well known issue. Being that mann hummel owns both you could get a wix filter that is actually a purolator inside or a purolator filter that is actually a wix. Like I said though quality control is gone.

My advice is avoid wix, purolator, and motorcraft. Seriously stop buying FL1995's and get something better.

Baldwin, Donaldson, and fleetguard all make quality filters

Agreed, but Napa's prices are often very high and paying top dollar for cheap chinese parts is not cool. I am often shocked how much the local Napa charges for filters.

Yep.

In my opinion, this is the best PSD filter for the price now, since the FL1995 went up ~170% price. It's their higher quality store brand filter, with synthetic filter media. They also come wrapped in plastic, inside the box, so it keeps them clean until you're ready to use them, even in a dusty garage. If you're doing an order for other stuff and you have $100+ or whatever current promo they have for home ship orders, you can get them for $8 (20% off).

It's actually probably superior to Napa Gold 1734 (FL1995 equiv) because 1734 has "enhanced cellulose" instead of synthetic media.

A snippet I found online:

"Synthetic media is less sensitive to moisture than cellulose or blown media and has a higher dirt holding capacity than other filters. Baldwin has a study that shows contamination that plugs 50% of cellulose filters will only plug 10% of synthetic media allowing for higher flow rates."

Plus Napa Gold 1734 costs 250% more than the $10 O'Reilly synthetic one.

In addition, information I'm seeing says Microgard Select (the higher priced line) is made by Wix.

It's the same effective part number as wix:

For the time being I'm content with the Donaldson DBL7405 even though the price has doubled from $20 a few years ago. I actually run the filter for a year/10,000miles and change the oil once a year now, Delvac 1300. I add a quart about every 1500-2000 miles so there is a fair amount of new oil getting in the engine and there are some very impressive UOAs for Delvac1300 at well over 10k miles--like one I read for Delvac at 27k miles with 6 quarts added. The original spec was 5k miles for normal duty and that's with older oil formulations and cellulose filter elements--things have changed and I think both filters and oils are likely better today.

To get good prices at Napa, you must first spend much money with them… join their cult… and then they’ll cut you deals…

Having one of the best Napas makes a difference, in all my travels none of them are as eager to take care of people as the Council Grove Napa.

I second that. The one I go to I worked at 12 years ago, and also made an account after I left and order everything through it. The discounts are pretty crazy sometimes.

For 10% off parts (not fluids, batteries, probably more) join AAA. They'll give the discount in store if you present the card.
