1984 6.9 IDI, C6, 4WD, Broken Transmission Adapter (Because I'm stupid).

The only advice I have to add is that I recommend you get a couple extra long 1/2 bolts or some threaded rod to use as guides when you re-install your transmission. I fought mine for an hour trying to get them lined up, and then went to the store to get some long bolts. 5 minutes later I was good to go.

Good luck, I hope that adapter is the only thing broken. Honestly before you start spending money I would do a compression test to get an idea whether you have any bent connecting rods.
Good advice on all fronts, thank you.

The motor currently spins freely with no noise (and seemed to have some compression), so I'm hopeful that I didn't do too much damage. If I did bend a rod then it's going to get interesting.

OK, so I’ve come across something kind of confusing here.

I tried to send a message to you when this was all going down, saying that I realize I had two different kinds of adapters, one is made of cast-iron and is 1 inch thick, and another that is made of cast aluminum and is 1 1/4 inch thick. However, that message did not actually send. That’s my bad.

I currently have three different kinds of transmissions around, it appears that the C6, T19, and ZF5 all use the 1 inch thick cast-iron adapter.

At the time of this dilemma, I did not have access to a C6 truck. Now I do, so that’s how I was able to figure it out.

But now my question is, does the E40D use a different adapter? And if not, where did this weird aluminum adapter come from?

Yes all of the IDIs use the same adapter plate. The PSDs use an aluminum one but it's only a spacer, not an adapter. If you look at the top of your aluminum plate, there's only two holes instead of the four like the cast iron ones have. The bellhousing bolt pattern was changed for the PSD.

The plate is the fuse.
Thank you for that insight, as well...I got to thinking that it is good that International fixed us up with a way of saving the engine block if we get to testing the engines patience...

I had an inkling there were two different adaptors looking around ebay, but I didn't realize what the difference was. I definitely learned something.
