Well I always say to find an age you like and stick with it. I thought 23 sounded like a good age, so I have stuck with it.
Actually in January I will be 79.
Majority of people are old between the ears,
all they talk about, "Oh Iam getting so old",
and they are 50 or 60 or?
You are what you think.....
or what you eat.....

True the young generation`s don`t want anything old, always after the new thing that is available.

Iam surprised by some of your ages, and who is holding onto a Mouse looking at a screen on the other end.

Lots of the High Schools have dropped Auto Shop and course`s like that, where that could stimulate interests in that direction.
I was in the FFA and we had a huge Farm Mechanics Building, had welding and all that sort of things....but that is all gone now.

Figure it has a lot to do with liability with the way our society thinks now and is.

Hey guys! So I'm pretty sure I got my turbo stuff sold next week, but I'm still working out funding this thing and what exactly I'm going to do. My NA pistons are great, but I still got a bent towards my 6.9. the block is really in great shape and for not much more money I can have done it "right" the first time. So I'm throwing this out to y'all regulars first, hiding this in this thread so you can have first shot at it, but I'm going to pull pistons out of my turbo motor on Monday, are any of you hot rod IDI guys interested in the rods? PM me if you are, the names I recognize as regular on the forum gets first consideration. Peace!

You’ve got something for that 6.9 engine. I don’t get it but respect it. I like the idea of the rods and have three engines but no current use for them. I may be driving through Florida at the end of the month so if you still have them I may pm you.

The rods are sold...... pretty much. But my bent towards the 6.9 is purely utilitarian. Less chance of cavitation, it's an extremely low mileage engine so it's like "new". Running waste oil in it just makes sense to me and when I stud it I can safely turbo it in the future with my aftermarket kit, I only want 6-8psi to make hill climbing look less pathetic.
But ultimately, when you have a cavitated block, you get paranoid about 7.3s. so a 30 over 6.9 sounds bout right!

How much were the 6.9s "bored" to make the 7.3s? (and the potential for cavitation)

I'd like to think that my turbo block is good enough that I could do a 20 over rebuild on it eventually for a standby engine for the tow truck. It's all part of my "I drive old vehicles" plan, you know: enough running vehicles, and extra "good" engines on standby, that way in the case of a failure it's not as devistating as it is right now without a truck........ more of my weirdness, I'm sure.

That sounds like a good plan.

Makes sense to me.

So legitimate question I have... I understand that the turbo rods are better than the idi, but why use them, when they were such a limited run? One goes bad, and you're stuck waiting to find another, whereas idi rods are everywhere? Just trying to understand the demand a bit more.

From experience your 7.3 is going to be cheaper than the 6.9.

The prices for 6.9 commodities are a good bit more than most of the 7.3 commodities.

Sure a lot of the stuff is interchangeable but for the most part when I rebuilt my 6.9 it was during the height of Covid and of course everything was on “back order…” so maybe it’s a little different now. Biggest thing I had a problem with was getting a new intake manifold gasket. I however build my own intake just like R&D did. Now I’m about to build another Intake For this 7.3 NA that I’m building and going to put a 4” aluminum 90 on it so I can put an actual breather on it that’s not directly in the top of the engine, plus it will eliminate the possibility of water getting into it due to the poor design of the hood that ford had.
Can you just bore a 6.9 into a 7.3 or is there complications in that process?
I imagine your water jackets would be extremely thinned out at that point. I can’t remember the bore diameter on the 6.9, but I believe the 7.3 is right at 4.00” or either 4.25”, I’ll have to google it or pull stock and stock later when I get home as I’ve got a 6.9 with a busted #8 cylinder sitting under my bench and a 7.3 on the stand that I need to get to rebuilding. But if you over bored to the diameter of the 7.3 I’d likely say you’d have an overheating issue due to the thinned out walls.
