Just wanted to share this. It's for a 15L caterpillar diesel. Napa gold made by wix in USA. Only about 3/4 of a thread to hold it onto the engine.

Napa brought out a replacement for it and it had the correct threads. Imagine if I had put that on without noticing! Thing would have blown off on the road somewhere.

I usually like wix.... Little worried now.

I nave seen that, but I have seen two that didn't have any threads at all. Oddly enough, they were both for IDIs. The first was brought in by a customer for us to put on his new engine. I filled the filter and tried and tried but couldn't get it to screw on. I finally pulled it back off to look at it. We had to put one of our own on for him. After that, I got in the habit of opening the box before paying for a new filter and checking. The second one was a FL1995 from Wal-Mart. I took it to the register with me, along with the one that I bought, and told the cashier that it wasn't any good. She sit it aside, but I have no idea what happened to it after that.

I had a Purolator fuel filter with wonky threads a while back. I was a spinning and a spinning and it wouldn't grab, then I looked and the first thread was boogered. Maybe we should inspect our filters before we just go putting them on.

Saw no threads once. (Not on a IDI.) Seen cross threaded once. Both were Motorcraft filters.

Threads like this are why I say over and over on this site. Never assume a new or rebuilt part is working out of the box. It’s sad but so true. Many of us have bought and installed a new part that was bad out of the box. Making things worse is when we say rebuilt a engine or fuel system. Now you have to go back to lots of parts to see which one (Don’t assume just one.) or ones are bad.

Some one on here once said (Maybe Wes)

NEW = Never Ever Worked

Like many have said, just because it is new, doesn’t mean it’s good……. BTDT

Since the rise in everything we buy, and the shortages of things. The past year or so I have been picking up the FL-1995 filters at Wally World when I see them on the shelf.
Think I have a dozen of them, better check them all to see if all are good.
The price has not changed through all this, still $9.44 ea.

I have seen a couple weeks go by when the shelf`s are empty on these filters, always a ton of fram`s. :puke:

I use the Mann filters on my Mercedes Diesels. Never had a problem with them, but on one site I use to purchase parts from, they had a good price on the Heingst Filters, and bought 6.
The top 3/4 of it is metal with lots of small holes, and bottom 3" is pleated paper.
The holes didn`t get punched open, and had to use a pick to push them open...time consuming, but they worked ok.

We took a trip from Santa Cruz, Ca. to Salt Lake City, Ut., I changed the oil before the trip and used a Heingst Filter. When we got back home I changed the oil, The filter had the metal sides sucked in like it had been in a vacuum. I guess the oil was being filtered through the 3" by pass section at the bottom.
I changed the oil & installed the other Heingst filter I had, and drove the car a few miles, came home and pulled the filter out of the canister, and it too was sucked in.
Used Mann filters ever since w/o any problems.

Goat.

My local store (the owner is a good friend of mine) never stocked FRAM until earlier this year. He said they were acquired by another company and is no longer the same product. This is a carquest store that has always stocked carquest filters made by Wix or Mann. They have the PSD FL-1995 motorcraft filter for 15.50$ as of yesterday when I bought one. That is down from 19-21$ it had been for the last several years.
