I also ceramic coated the exhaust all the way to the down pipe, turbo hot side, the wye thing, and the exhaust manifolds so under hood temperature was dramatically reduced, keeping that heat in will drive the turbo harder, meaning more responsive and efficient.
I did this (actually Wes cera coated it) to mine mostly to help keep heat out of the cab in the summer time. What you mentioned is just a bonus that I'll gladly take.

Thank you for all those details!:) I have to pull my turbo at some point to reseal the pedestal, and I want to ceramic coat it when it’s out. And as for my intake, it’s a three inch direct to the turbo with a K&N cone filter. Here’s a picture of the setup:

I want to move the filter to over by the fuse box, because right now it’s more of a “hot” air intake. I don’t know if the three inch air passage is restrictive, but I think it could be a little bigger

Looks good to me, I think 3 is plenty. Use that K&N till you're done with it, gotta keep it oiled up, it's a PITA otherwise crud gets into the engine.

Donaldson 6637 filters are what most people use on the newer diesels, it's what I got too. It feels a little more restrictive than a cone filter but it's going to keep it cleaner too if so.

Somebody tested intake temperature and it didn't change much when pulling it from in front of the rad or behind, when you're actually cruising. I think it was on FTE or something where they tested temps on different runs. Could run a snorkel or cowl intake too but you'd need a filter box of some sort.

Good to know that the temp doesn’t change a whole lot. I’m still considering fabing a forced cold air intake. I’m just thinking that if I’m able to pull are direct from out side the engine bay it might be colder and therefore denser. The truck pulls real hard and the temps are good right now, I’m just thinking about when I’m hauling hay this summer. I don’t want to have to worry about temps then.
Also, I have heat wrap coming tomorrow that I’m going wrap the turbo crossover pipe for now.

Well, I built a cowl induction intake and yesterday and today I’ve been working the truck on the grades and getting it sweaty, and pyro won’t go past 1050-1075. That’s with it floored in 5th on a 7.5-8 % grade. I’m going to turn the fuel up 1-1.5 flats when all the snow up here quits falling. All in all, I am very happy with how it’s performing. Between the downpipe and intake, I’ve dropped about 400* when I’m just cruising, and about 2-300* when I’m working it :Thumbs Upthank you all for the advice and tips :)
I’ll post the results of how upping the fuel goes and how it affects performance

The stock filter is not restrictive till the filter plugs up.
I ran for years with a magnehelic vacuum gauge on mine and never saw any numbers high enough to worry about, Unless the plastic duct to the front was connected, that thing is a POS.
Highest numbers I ever saw was with the filter setup pictured.

BTW I have gasket kits for sealing up your turbo mounting.

Thanks for the insight Russ.:) The cowl setup I did would have been a lot easier if I had the stock airbox, but the truck came to me with the “cold” air intake that is in the picture I posted earlier in the thread, so I just worked with what I had. This is what the air system looks like now:

It flows really well now and has a ram air effect that I’m really happy with. Not to mention the whole thing didn’t cost me a cent

Also, thank you for the link to your website:) I’ll be getting the reseal kit from you when work picks back up for me. I’m not worried about the turbo leak right now, it’s just barely weeping where the turbo meets the pedestal

That's the best part right here. I have to admit that you've inspired me some too. When I get around to installing the first gen Banks that I have on my truck, I'm going to build the lower half of the down pipe myself (the used kit only came with the upper half). I was going to have a local muffler shop do it, but who knows if it's even still in business now?

It’s always more satisfying when you build it yourself :Thumbs Up
