The DT360 would be easier to swap into a F series truck than the 466. Several guys have done it already and Carson Stauffer diesel makes conversion parts for it.
Is it about as easy as a typical 4bt swap? And cost effective?

I'm sure not as easy as a 4BT, but definitely unique. There's videos of a few of them on youtube.

I did a DT360 swap, it is not that easy in multiple ways. it is definitely more unique. i refused to go down the Cummins swap crowd path.

some of the major hurdles with a DT swap.

-you will need to cut out your cross member and fabricate a new one to fit the engine
-unless you are going to pony up the money for an adapter about 800 for an auto or about 2k for a stick shift you are going to run a medium duty transmission. more fabrication and work to fit a medium duty transmission like i did, i also fabricated in a divorced transfer case to keep 4x4.
-you will need to fabricate all of the motor mounts and interaction points on the engine. no bolt in solutions for this set up.

lots of other little challenges but those are some of the big ones off the top of my head.

Rank amateur here. But if you are considering a S-10 or similar size truck and want four wheel drive for a unique package, you might consider a Jeep Comanche with a om617. IMHO, the Benz 5 cylinder is underpowered for a full size truck.

I actually am targeting 90s era k1500, or early 90s era f series

I see the OM617 already mentioned, there's also a newER Mercedes diesel that can be converted to mechanical using the OM617s bigger brother (6cyl I forget the code but the OM617 is a 5 cylinder if I remember correctly)

If you end up opting for a smaller truck it opens up the possibility of a TDI swap. I couldn't imagine it being enough power but several people have done it in Jeeps so it it can't be too bad.

I have a 87 Dodge Raider AKA Mitsubishi Montero got it for free, mine is the gas 2.8 or 2.4 cant remember with about a million miles of vacuum hose, but I have been told by multiple mechanics overseas that the Mitsubishi 4D55 (non turbo) or 4D56 (turbo) mates right up no mods too bell housing or Mounts. Its a cool little rig under powered, terrible on road trips, mediocre offroad (IMHO) compared to say a Samurai but the ability to bolt a diesel straight in is tops!

Always been a Montero fan! I'd dig a diesel.
The Sammi's are great off the road, but pretty much suck over it...

Just scour CL, MY 89 F250 was listed for 3500 or trade 117miles north of me
You must be registered for see images attach
, I drove up too look at it, it was a NewYork truck with some rust issues, but I ended up trading a beater 78 CJ7 I had bought from a guy for 800 ish dollars he couldn't get it running right and wasn't a mechanic. I found the problem straight away and told him I could fix it for free he was just over it... So I drove it for 3 years, traded it straight up for the IDI with at the time 38K miles on it, without a doubt the best most reliable rig I own it gets 17MPG in town, and up to 21MPG n hiway its no power house but a good truck to learn about diesels and all the pros and cons of owning one. It can haul reasonable loads is comfortable to drive just a joy to own. But there are cons but that's everything, swaping out motors and vehicles is painfull time consuming and expensive but its a great learning process.
