do you think this was a contributor to the hold start issue you had?

I guess we will never know for sure. But its certainly possible. Especially if the gap between the head and the block was much worse in low temps.

Well, I think the next thing to do is pluck the block out of the engine bay. I'd want to do that no matter which path I choose.

But I'm thinking, maybe I look at the crank, and if it looks like I could get away with just new shells, maybe I source another block and try to build her back up. Looks like heads are easy to find. This truck is just a fun daily, so it doesn't have to be absolutely dead nuts bullet proof. So with my rotating mass, maybe I can patch something decent together for a cost I can live with and get a few more years out of it.

Probably, but at this point I really dont think I want to throw any money at this particular block.
upon further examination, looks like all 4 holes have been sleeved, and the sleeve in #2 is standing about 2 razor blades proud. the others are flat. so I really dont know what I have here...

I'm late to the party Rob, but man that stinks she puked on you. So glad you were able to rebuild it and keep the coolest ranger in the US on the road with the 4BT under the hood.

How's she running now?

Yeah it was the strangest thing Heath. I still cant picture how that happened to the block. There must have been some sort of pre-existing condition. Or maybe it has been full-on blown since the day I got it, but since it is in such a light weight light duty application all was good for 5 years or so.

I guess I'll never know for sure. It didn't owe me anything. I bought it from that Amish dude in PA, and just power washed it, ran it, and never looked back. The ole 20/20 hind sight tells me I should have at least popped the head off and taken a look.

She's running superb now. I only wish I had the opportunity to put more miles on her than I have with the rona slowing things way way down like they have.
