Ok so it's been a year since I got that 7.3, and I have learned a lot of parts are different on the f series compared to what I have. None the less im in the process of buttoning her up and pulling the 5.4 out(finally shelled out the gasser). Found a tag on the IP from a local diesel shop so I can assume the pump has been gone thru at least once? Also pulled the pan to swap out to a rear sump pan and found a nice clean bottom end. After looking at the 6.9 engine I robbed the pan off I was pleasantly surprised. Looks like someone took care of this engine.
As long as you change the oil on a regular basis, *any* IDI can look like that. It's the #1 thing I believe in with an IDI - 3K or so mile changes(oil quality doesn't matter - cheap is fine. It's changing it to get the crud out of it).

Also, if you've still got that IHC oil pan and pickup, hang onto it - I might try to buy it off you for a project.

Ok I wasn't planning on tossing it

You should be able to get a modified vehicle exemption

I agree also, it's good no one will look at it. But most states and the feds do not like you making a newer "clean" truck "dirty" with a older engine.

You are good to go, but this is just for other people reading this thread who live in other areas.

Another question I am curious about; Will the idi be tucked underneath the cab like the original engine? Is that year truck one of those that the cab needs to be lifted up to do certain things to the engine?

I have a 09 I use at work, and I am trying to figure out what they did that leads to the engine being back under the cowl. It doesn't seem obvious from the outside. Is the front of the door that much closer to the front wheel? Or is it all that intercooler and stuff in the front the cause for shoving the engine back underneath the firewall area?

Yes the cab could come off but I'm pulling the front radiator and support out to do my swap. I will also pull the fenders to make it easier to do mods. I know to pull the heads off the 5.4 I would have to raise my cab 6 in.

Idibronco you seem to know a lot between the differences of the f series and the IHC. What else is there that I haven't found yet between the two

Just off of the top of my head, exhaust, motor mounts, water pump, oil pan, oil pump pickup tube, oil cooler, and the acessories and their mounts. The engines are pretty much identical internally. The injector pump is different, the fuel filter housing is different, but could work, and the IRC engines time off of #4 like a van does, but will run fine this way.

IDIbronco So i have to time off #4, like where i found the factory timing boss. What would happen if i timed off #1? So far i have changed the exhaust, water pump, accessory mounts, oil pan, pick up, dipstick, and engine mounts. Do you know what is different with the ip's and is it something i should be concerned about?

For one, your throttle cable won't hook up to the IHC style. if you look at where it attaches, you'll be able to see the difference. Don't quote me on this, but I believe that someone on here mentioned one time that the IHC injector pumps were governed to a lower RPM the the Ford ones were. As for the timing, I suppose you could time off of #1, but you couldn't use the timing adapter. You'd have to clamp your pick up to the injector line unless you're using the luminosity probe. Since I've never seen or used one, I only have a faint idea of how they work. When you change out injector pumps, you can use which ever set ob lines that you want. Just move the timing adapter if you use the F series lines. You want it to go on the correct injector so that your injector lines will all be the correct length.

So I shouldn't remove the timing adapter off a line 4? Wouldn't I have to go off of number four because of harmonic balancer lining up 4 top dead center

also i was worried about the governing of the ip, i have a ip off a 6.9 and a buddy has a spare off a 7.3. if i swapped to either of them would it change my timing point? i have all the throttle cable stuff off of the 6.9. so many questions

I'm not sure on that one. You could check the two balancers for differences. Just hold them so that the keyways are in the same position, and then compare the positions of the lines on the balancers. Then let us know the results. From what I've found, #1 is first in the firing order while #4 is fifth. If they are different, the I would assume the the E series used IHC balancers since they also time on #4.

Nope both balancers are the same. So I'm guessing that one and five come up at top dead center on that mark. It's the only way. Kind of like a Chevy V8 one and six both come up at top dead center

Unless somebody here knows different, then I'd suggest swapping the injector pump and the balancer off of one of the F series engines. The IHC flywheel won't work with a pickup transmission anyway. If you use the pump, injector lines, balancer, and flywheel off of the same engine, then I don't see where you'll have any issues.

I guess you're golden then. I thought that they may be the same.
