Ok so it's been a year since I got that 7.3, and I have learned a lot of parts are different on the f series compared to what I have. None the less im in the process of buttoning her up and pulling the 5.4 out(finally shelled out the gasser). Found a tag on the IP from a local diesel shop so I can assume the pump has been gone thru at least once? Also pulled the pan to swap out to a rear sump pan and found a nice clean bottom end. After looking at the 6.9 engine I robbed the pan off I was pleasantly surprised. Looks like someone took care of this engine.

Knowing what I know now, and seeing your picture above with the engine out, if I were you I would spend just a tiny bit of money, and a little bit of time and aggravation, and pull the oil cooler off and reseal it. That would be new o-rings and gaskets. You have to be careful doing it, and usually use some sort of press to get it back together, but you would not believe how aggravating and how big a mess it is to do this in the truck. On the older trucks you have to lift the engine a little bit to get it out, who knows what you will have to do on your newer truck after you get it in place.

Yep that was my plan for today and tomorrow. I have to pull the oil cooler off of the 6.9 and put it on my 7.3 So that I can use the motor mounts

Definitely change the oil cooler because it sits right under the header so the o rings in the are nice and crispy after 25+ years. Just be careful if you are trying to blow out the tubes you can break those with some pressurized air.

If you get it going right this is a cool project. Lots of those 5.4 250s out there and while those motors are plentiful, this sure is gonna be a rugged setup

Another thing to remember to swap out it the one main cap bolt that the F series pick up tube bolts on to. There's no stud on the IHC version and the pick up tube will most likely break if not held on to it.

Apparently a lot of people are having problems with the 2004-up 3 valve 5.4 engines. So there may be even more trucks sitting around inviting a engine swap. Some people will have trouble though, these old engines are not going to pass smog in the newer trucks.

I noticed that when I pulled the pan off of the IHC engine compared to the f series so I already have that bolt out of the f series ready to go. Thanks for the info though

Yeah but my truck qualifies for heavy duty emissions so I don't have to worry about that and I live in an area that doesn't test for emissions on top of it.

Idibronco you seem to know a lot between the differences of the f series and the IHC. What else is there that I haven't found yet between the two

And from what I've researched about the engine swap issue the vehicle gets tested for smog based on the engine has in it. So if you have an older engine you go off the older smog requirements

Don't know about IL but most states do test according to the VIN rather than the installed engine, which is why that was mentioned. If it doesn't apply to you, awesome! :D
