Give me a damn Christmas starter recommendation.

Hey guys what's the best starter i can buy next to oem equipment?
I dont need the super ultra starter i just want minimum as good as factory parts. I wasnt able to find an oem starter on rock auto unless it was rebuilt. I also dont mind the idea of the gear reduction stater as mentioned in the tech. section article on starter replacement.
At the moment i have to tap my starter with a hammer some times to get the gear to engage the fly wheel. So it needs replacing. Money is not really an issue but i do not need some billet machined super starter just a reliable one.

If they have a good reputation then absolutely. Even new ones are likely to be inferior to a GOOD, QUALITY rebuild of an OE part. Cardone and the like mass rebuild them cheaply. A GOOD rebuilder will make sure everything is right before it leaves. They are fixing your part and (hopefully) not just rushing one of a hundred pieces out the door just to get paid.

So, two options. I definitely recommend a good local rebuild - I've pulled apart and "rebuilt" a few myself. Generally, there's very little wrong that a new set of brushes and a good cleaning/re-greasing won't fix.

This is basically the cheapest new one of this style I can find.
I've gotten two of these so far for different people/projects, both work surprisingly well. Good cranking speed, so far they are reliable.

I will say that the first one my friend recently abused - basically drained an entire (new) battery into it cranking pretty much constantly(like 30s cranking, 10 second rest). At the end, it started to stick a little, and the rubber protector over the copper lead from the motor to the solenoid had gotten so hot that it had carbonized and was crunchy.
Still, it cranked over just fine, but we will end up pulling it apart and cleaning it before shoving it back in there.

The lesson to be taken from this is that duty cycles are a thing. Keep it from getting to plastic melting temperature and it'll probably run for a long time.

I've finally got a decent starter still can't get a good used set of battery cables since I just started back to work but bought mine from advanced Auto for $120 with old trade in.

I know most of ya'll don't like the zone but for a life time warranty it's not bad. I'm on my second one in fifteen years and the last one was free. I bought the new one which is there top line and gear reduction. It truns old blue over faster than the oem it came with in 86. And if it goes out a new one is just a zone away. And I don't own stock with them. I wish I did. Rodney

Tried one of those (actually bought it from them direct). had a 1 year warranty, it lasted 13 months. Not saying anything bad, just that even the ones with a good rep can have a few that don't stand up. When it went bad I needed one fast so I did the O'Reilly thing. Lifetime warranty and I don't have much problem getting them off and on like some people say they do. I've had it for about a year or so and still cranking strong.

I have a napa with a lifetime warranty this is my 2nd replacement last time I changed it was because I burned the first one up cranking to long this one has lasted me about 2 years so far and still doing good

Lifetime warranty ONLY mean you pay once for it.But generally speaking.. You will get very good doing the replacements because you just will be doing them. This forum is long standing with proof to this fact. Some chain store fake auto parts stores do get good rebuilds as already posted here.Thats not the norm...

Quite true, but I also had highly recommended parts go bad quickly as stated previously. That may not always be the norm... but it happens. I needed something fast as I needed the truck. It has lasted and if it goes out I don't have to wait for a new one to be shipped. It is all a trade off. Seems like that is the normal part of life anymore. I cover a lot of ground in my travels and the convenience of returning/replacing sometimes comes at a price. The starter is easy for me to replace, other parts are not so the cost/time to replace is balanced out. Life, to me is a cost/benefit analysis, everything has a cost and a benefit. Finding that balance is where each of us needs to get to.

The op has a decision and he has definitely came to the right place to get experience and info. I hope he can get the best for his situation.

That is very true lucky for me I'm still young enough I can crawl under the truck and do it but the quality can be very spotty at best with the big chain stores
