Better acceleration cold than warm!

I have a 92 F350 NA that when warming up driving has a more normal acceleration than after it warms up. After it warms up it is more like "don't push me, I'm getting there"!
I know that when cold the IP is advanced a little but after it warms up, well, more like an old hound dog that's ready to be put down.
Now I know we do NOT put our old dogs down but am not about to put my old idi down either.
1. mileage: indeterminate
2. pulls trailers with heavy equipment ok but slow.
3. haven't timed it, timing mark on IP is in line with the other mark on the whatchamacallit.

Question does all the other idi's run like this?
Thanks

Duke

The timing advance helps, but if its that drastic I'd suspect a worn IP. How does it start on a hot day when engine is hot?

Wire the cold advance to the front prong on the ip and take it for a drive. If it’s better when hot you know it needs the timing advanced ;Sweet

yep, she is much quicker now. Idling rpms are up to 900 now but definitely quicker.
When this truck was given to me last year, the po said that the engine had been replaced. But it looks old from the paint that is on it and the injector pump. But am sold 100% on IDI's vs powerstroke engines. Not that the psd is bad but more things to go wrong electrically. Thanks Wes
Just need to time it. Have to look for a used timing gizmo I guess.

You can move it a dimes width towards the passenger side and that should help it out

This is basically how I timed my truck, just mess with it until it acted right through lots of trial and error. We put a meter on it at the rally and I had it at 9.3 degrees. Not bad for timing by feel :)

Try a dimes thickness first like Wes said. If you don't feel the dramatic difference between the cold advance and warm you're real close. Should be some difference but yours sounds like mine was just a little bit before I got it right.

Right! I have read from all of your posts just a dimes width. I do suspect a worn ip.
driving home with that jumper wire staying on. Will keep an eye on my temps.

By saying that the timing marks on your pump and housing are lined up, I'm suspecting retarded timing over worn pump. The pump could be worn too, but those marks don't mean much after the pump has been replaced. They are still a good marker to judge how far you move the pump though.

I agree. The truck ran chipper on the way home and am convinced that it is a well worn pump but runs acceptable for it age....what ever that may be. Odometer was one of those LCD ones burnt out, speedo didn't work. Just swapped out the speedo from my 92 e150 so now I have speedo. But that odo is bad also.
Truck didn't run any hotter on the interstate, just higher idle rpms.

thanks men for the great advice.

well, what I did I believe is jumper the front connector to the fuel shutoff connection which would normally be hot with engine on. I was under the assumption that if advanced timing, the idle rpm's would increase slightly
I may be wrong bit the fast idle sole oid has never worked. I thought about that though
