Hey all, I just picked up a zf from an 91' f450 7.3 2wd, it has the park brake assembley on it, Can I take that off and just bolt a transfer case on? I really have no use for the parking brake assembley, and with the transfer case there already it will make me more ambitous to put a d-60 up front.:D Thanks for the help. -Brad-

Not sure if it is any good or not, I havent picked it up yet, going to get it on thurs.....I know its complete but has been laying around in the weeds for a while though....I hit a goldmine with this guy who is selling me this, He has IDI all over the place, he owns a fence company and only runs IDI's with handshakers, I bet you he has over 10 engines just sitting there waiting for a guy like me to by one or two.:D -Brad-

P.S. I will get some pics of it on thurs or fri, if you want it let me know, I have no use for it.

oh yea, yes the transfer case will bolt up to it.

Wait, I am new and all, but I was sure I read that the 2wd and 4wd zf 5 spd were incompatible??? But If I am reading this correctly you are telling him a transfer case will bolt right up to this one he got from a 2wd f450?

Is it because it was an f450 trans that makes it compatible?

The F-450 uses a 4x4 tranny. Instead of the transfer case, the parking brake assembly bolts to the rear of the tranny, with the output shaft feeding the parking brake assembly...and the driveshaft connects to the rear of the parking brake assembly.

I've got an F-450 tranny in my 4x4 F-250...it works just fine!!! :D

That's  I don't think I knew that. So if anybody ever needed a new ZF for a 2WD, and they could only find a 4X4 trans, they could easy adapt it with a parking brake assy. ;Sweet

mel-
you're not doing anyone any favors. the resivoir for the park brake assy bearings hold a 1/2 pint of oil (10/40) and they often leak. usually when the leak is discovered, it's too late and the whole assy is now junk. Ford does not sell service parts for this animal-cuss
don't ask how much for the new assy is going to cost:eek:

On the towing boards you will often find folks begging for good used parking brake assemblies. They are mucho expensive and create a real bad vibration when the bearings go bad.

If you really wanted to use a 4x4 trans in a 2wd application, it shouldn't be that hard to have an output shaft extention machined for use with a 2wd tailhousing.

There are enough 2wd trannies out there that if somebody can't find one they aren't looking very hard.

Well pulled the trans apart yesterday, the internals look real good, Since all I need is the input shaft can i just swap the one from the donor trans in to the 2wd? Or will this cause issues using "USED" parts from two differant transmissions? The parking brake spins freely but one of the bearings is destroyed on it, Towcat Let me know if you want it, Pm me, Make an offer,I am looking for a clutch for this rig also, 6.9 solid flywheel, 5spd, anyone know a good place to get one? Thanks -Brad-

I'm told the 12" clutch disk from an 88 with the 460 and the ZF will work IF you have the optional 12" pressure plate on your 6.9 - but the ones I've seen have a narrow strip of friction material around the outside instead of having friction material that covers the whole disk from its edge all the way to the spring mechanism of the hub.

You can buy the 11" pressure plate and disk kit for the 87 DMF from Schucks/Checker/Kragen (item # NU31103) and make it work, but the pressure plate has 1/2" less depth (dish, thickness, whatever you want to call it) so you have to modify the clutch fork. You any also unscrew the pivot stud that the fork rides on, and add a 1/4" spacer under it to move the throwout bearing end of the pivot fork forward 1/2" wile leaving the slave cylinder end in its stock location.

If you can find and buy separately 1) a sprung-hub disk for the 7.3 DMF that came with the ZF tranny, and the pressure plate for the SMF that would the ideal.....

I'm working on doing the same swap myself right now....

The bearings inside of those are basic tapered roller bearings that you can get at any bearing jobber. The parking brakes "are" servicable, there is a blowup and special tool list in my 94 factory service manual.
