Drove my truck to work tonight, about twenty miles in the rain. When I arrived at work, I turned off key and truck continued to run, as normal? I had to switch key on and off about three times befroe engine would shut off. Any ideas what it could be, or has anyone else ever had this problem?

Sounds like the ignition switch. W/O being there it is hard to be sure, but that is where I would start

Also may be a bad FSS.

Nooby question, What is an FSS? and I have also seen iirc used alot in different areas, what is that?

On a side note, I drove home from work this morning and truck turned off with kay, just as it is supposed to do.
another question, I removed the bottom cover from my steering column at work last night, and noticed a small black with white hash marks, wire hanging by the key switch, it appears to have part of a broken connector , brown in color on the end of it. This wire is in a yellow plastic wire coverwith about 4 other wires, that plug into the back of steering wheel area. I traced the other end of the yellow group of wires to behind the dash, where they have a conector , but it is not pluged into anything, and I do not see a plug around there for them to plug into. Does anyone know what these wires are for? My horn and cruise control do not work either, but this truck has an exploding steering wheel, so I am wondering it they connect to that?

When you go messing with any wiring in the steering column, DISCONNECT BOTH BATTERY NEGATIVE WIRES that is a safety to keep from setting off the air bag.

If the engine doesn't shut down when you turn the key OFF, try this, Open the hood and disconnect the wire on top of the IP (Injector Pump) to the FSS (Fuel Shutoff Solenoid) as shown in pic below. If the engine doesn't STOP, then that indicates the FSS is sticking OPEN. If the engine STOPS, then it's in the wiring or key switch.

Thanks for the responses. I have not had any more issues, with the truck not shutting off, guess it was just one of those "Things".

Does anyone know what the broken wire in the steering colum I talked about earlier might be. I had stated it was in the yellow wire sleeve, which was wrong, it is in a black wire sleeve. I have searched around the internet, trying to find a wiring diagram, but have had no luck. I am also trying to locate a book, like Haynes or Chilton, but so far everything I have found is for gas engines only.

Pop open the hood next time and pull the FSS connector. If it dies, cable. If not, bad FSS (or she's running on oil :X )

Also, you could run a toggle switch temporarily in the even of it being a bad wire - hot to switch, switch to FSS. I hotwired my truck one day with my knife and a single wire - used the wire to manually trigger glowplugs, then hooked the IP up to power, already have pushbutton starter. Yeehaw

Help!
I drove my truck today, and when I went to stop at the bank it would not turn off. I did as several of you have said, unplugged FSS, pulled fuse to FSS, nothing worked, truck continued to run. I even lowered idle as low as it would go, and put a piece of thick cardboard over air intake! Betty just said you aint killin me this way. Since I was out of options, I crawled under truck, and put a pair of vise grips on rubber fuel line coming out of tank switch valve. Iwaiting thinking it would die from lack of fuel, that did not happen. I tapped on top of IP with screw driver handle, thinking maybe FSS would jar loose. no luck, I finally took my gerber multi tool , and sqeezed shut the return line going into the top of IP, where FSS is located and betty died instantly! It appears she was running on fuel from return lines that connect to injector caps. Please help me with your thoughts on this problem. Having a truck that will not shut off, when you turn off the key is a pretty scary feeling, and I aint never been scared of nuttin!
