Would this be at all useful for a filter head? How does it hook up?

I got this filter head for dirt cheap awhile back thinking I could possibly use it (well, it was two heads together on a bracket). They're off an old International dozer with a DT807 (I believe) in it.

The two filter heads were identical, one had a Fram P1125 on it and the other was a P1118. I was only able to salvage the one head because the filter was rusted on the other one. They're both the same filter head, kind of an odd setup as it has a long tube that runs down the middle of the filter. They're big filters too, about 8" long.

Anyway I was looking at this head tonight and wondering how they hook up. As I got it, shown in this picture:

Starting at the front, since I need to explain the top one last...
Front fitting was connected to the top fitting of the other filter head by a hardline.
The fitting on the left side had a short piece of cloth braided tubing (with crimped on metal fittings) threaded on to it. I guess this would be the outlet? There's an identical port on the right side of the filter head, it had a plug in it.
The small plug on top of this one was just, well...a plug, but the other filter head had a brass bleeder screw in this spot.
Finally the top fitting I believe didn't have anything attached, not sure where it goes. Also I removed the top fitting and it looks like this:

What is the function of that?

Anyway I don't know what I would use this for...apparently the filters it takes are rated at 12 microns... :dunno

Fram P1118 = Napa 3341: primary 30 micron
Fram P1125 = Napa 3342: secondary 10 micron

The fitting with the tube I'm assuming was in the primary (first) filter and lead any fuel/water straight to the bottom of the filter. Just a theory.

Like many universal filter-heads, that one has options for various inlets and outlets, which is what the plugged holes are.

Most also have a 1/8-NPT port in the top for either/or bleeding and attaching a gauge-line.

You don't necessarily have to use that head paired with another.

You could run a PRIMARY filter on that head and let the factory filter be the secondary.

Most of those heads are of a standard thread and surface area, thus allowing a whole host of various filters to be used.

Filter diameter is not too critical, so long as the O-ring-seal compresses on the machined surface.

That head looks like it would clean up and work. ;Sweet

Hm...weird...I looked up the baldwin intercharge numbers which come up as BF978 and BF979...and some website I found said they were both 12 micron?
Wondered why they would both be the same, I guess that isn't quite right.

Thanks for that info though, I might try the 30 micron as a pre-pump filter or something. So basically any filter that will thread on and is long enough to clear the center post on this head will work? Looks like you can get some neat filters for this head...I've found some clear down to 2 microns, and a 140 micron wire mesh version. Cool :)

So which port should I use for the inlet...the one on the front, or the one on the top?

So long as you choose the proper directions of flow, it matters not which ports you use for the inlet or outlet.

Use whichever ones best suit your location/position.

If they are not marked "INLET" and "OUTLET", then poke a wire down each one and see where the wire enters the filter area.

The center hole of the filter cartridge is the outlet. ;Sweet

The CENTER is the outlet? Ahhh...good to know, haha! I thought it was the other way around!

So I got to messing with the other filter head tonight and I managed to get the rusted remnants of that filter off as well...so now I have two nice filter heads I can use ;Sweet Glad I didn't buy an aftermarket one!

Now I can start working on setting up my electric fuel pump.

Most OTR diesel trucks and busses all have a dual filter system "Primary and Secondary" filters. Like said there are all kinds of micron filters available. If you are using an electric pump, the filters go after the pump, Electric's PUSH, Gear or Diaphram pumps PULL.
