Eventually you will have to adjust the timing as the IP and injectors wear. An electric pump not providing as much fuel pressure as it did earlier can also be a cause for having to adjust the timing. The timing shouldn't have anything to do with the idle speed though. That should remain the same.

Agreed, the only adjustment that changes idle speed that I know of is the fuel screw inside. It'll change timing and idle speed IIRC.

@Tizzy. I'm now leaning towards the starter. It starts cold, but once warm I've had to jump it to get it to fire. It's crazy how it doesn't sound slow, but man when i hook another vehicle to it, it sings. I had the same thought when I replaced the batteries.

The last time I bought a starter for an idi was back in 2014 and I just grabbed one from the parts store and i went through 2 before one worked. Is Powermaster the go to starter? I'm trying to navigate their website, does anyone know which one i need?

Just be sure to remove the block drain before you remove the old block heater. It really minimizes the green shower syndrome.

I use one of these Home Depot concrete mixing pans to catch
the coolant when the Plug is removed.
They come in different sizes. I have this one and one a bit smaller.

Works good when changing auto trans fluid/pan etc....

Update: Replaced starter with a Power Master, new block heater and glow plugs. It did a new electric lift pump, power steering pump, and water pump. When cold (55f) I apply glow plugs and she fires right up, and runs absolutely amazing. Best it ever has. Got to work this morning, and after about 30 minutes I went to start it and it would not. Truck ran for an hour and drove 36 miles before work. Im going to remove my batteries that are 2 years old and have them charged and tested. My 10 amp auto charger hasnt been able to bring them to full charge.

It’s a fuel issue. Glow plugs aren’t needed after driving so that’s out. Starter wouldn’t matter at all if it turns it turns. Electric lift pumps are very problematic but I’d bet that’s not it yet since this is an old issue. It’s your ip getting hot id bet. It’s common and called heat soak.

Ounce its cooled off it fires up, hotter the day worse it is. hotter the truck gets the lower the idle is. just noticed that yesterday on my way home. I thought I had read some where that I could poor a cup of water over the injection pump. if it cools the pump and starts you know its the pump? It runs so damn good.

This is correct. They can be wore out and still run good. I had one that was that way before I knew about the water trick. I really didn't think that it would start again. It probably took 20+ seconds of cranking with the starter. I had one more stop that I had to make and I just let the engine run. The truck felt fine on the drive home.

How is it that I've had my 1988 F250 XLT Lariat super cab 4x4 7.3 since NEW... and never heard of the cold water trick???
For some reason I feel OP's problems are with the electric fuel pump.
