I'm thinking about getting a winch for the truck. I'd mount it on a plate such that I could mount it in one of my 2" receivers, or hook a chain to it and use a clevis on one of my front corners. Obviously, if I needed to, I'd try to use it if I got stuck, but mostly I would probably want to use it to drag logs out of ravines for firewood.

So the question is, what should I get and where should I try to find it? Honestly, I've looked at the Warn stuff, and it's just WAY out of my price range. My honest budget at this point is about $200, and I doubt that I'll be able to find anything that I could use to pull the truck until I at least triple my price range, but what the heck. I figure I'll start looking now and see what I find.

I am looking at getting a smittybilt xrc10 some time in the future. Smittybilt is well accepted in the internet jeep crowd. Yes, at about $550 it's out of your specified price range, but at about half the cost of a warn.....

tractor supply buy one of their atv winches 3500 lbs it will help youre truck if youre careful but best for logs i used mine for that for a while and it worked great

Check out Harbor Freight for winches. Get the one that is remote control. That way if the truck is stuck you can drive it an still pull with the winch to help. They have a sale on them every now and then. Yuo will need one with a hundred foot cable. I had an 8000 lb one, it worked great.

Get the HF 8k winch, get on their mailing list and wait around for one of their 20% off coupons to get it. If you use a snatch block on that winch doubled back to your truck it is good for 16k... at least as long as the cable holds out, you want to be at a safe distance when using a snatch block when getting anywhere near line capacity

I've got a warn 12k winch on mine and I gross 18k with my 5er, but with a snatch block, I'd be able to pull the thing loose if needed ( I got it because AAA and Good sam won't pay for a tow if you get stuck in an RV park or campground or worse, BLM camp area, they consider that a safe area, so you pay that out of pocket and since it's considered offroad, it can get expensive quick )

Also throw a towel or a t-shirt over the line. That way if it does break the towel will absorb all the energy and the line wont whip around like a bat outta hell.

Just remember what I paid for mine $289 on sale. Couldn't think of the name Snatch block, was going to suggest that also. Got CRS tonight.

A hydro winch can be run continuously without heating up the motor or running down the batteries, for a constant use app such as using your truck as a skidder, that or a PTO drive is the ultimate. If it's a once in a while kind of thing where it might see an hour of short runs, a good electric will be just fine. I suggest watching craigslist or the likes for a good used Warn, 8000lb or bigger. Even used a good Warn is better than a new made in china special.

If it's for an emergency use only kind of thing where it's there for that "oh crap" moment, anything is better than nothing, and as long as it's maintained and not left to languish on the nose of the truck, will most likely work just fine.

Dont get some no name POS. My brother bought a 9k No name from ebay 2 years ago. Have it mounted to his 25' deck over trailer for picking up dead trucks. Used it 2-3 times winching on non-running pickups. The last time was winching on a 7k reg cab F350 dually. It got halfway up the trailer and the winch just quit. had to use a come-a-long to get the rest of the way on.


For a winch, i think warn is over priced

I really like the bang for the buck of a superwinch. We had one on my dads trailer . It was only a X2(2000lb) that winch would DRAG a car on the trailer(all 4 tires locked up). It it would stop, give it a min or 2 and try again, it would just keep on running. We probably loaded 10-15 cars like that and when we sold the trailer the winch still worked.

Keep your eyes open on line or local 4wd shops.I just picked up 2 superwinch 8500 for 600. One for my trailer, one to replace my brother POS no name.

I couldn't agree more! I was at Costco yesterday and seen an 8500 pounder for $330. It was a superwinch LB8500, came with the roller fairleads, remote on an 8 foot lead to reach the driver seat, and a couple other goodies....I think a tree saver, snatch block and gloves in a bag.

If I had the $$ I would have had that thing in a heartbeat......but I just spent a TON of cash on the 4 wheeler, and I got to wait for that to come back to me first.

If you plan on pulling stuff at line capacity....do exactly as was suggested, put a heavy blanket, or anything like that on the line. If it decided to quit and fly apart, it won't come flying at you as bad, and it might save your radiator, windshield.....or life!

I have an M12000lb Warn and an 8000LB Champion - both are portable. The warn is an animal - nothing stops it and I don't have a snatch block for it either - I would love to see how that beast would work with one...It's about 6-7yrs old and my buddy uses it steady for hauling cars/trucks on his trailer and he has yet to see anything it won't drag....I bought the Champion to keep in the truck while plowing incase I get stuck...I ran 2/0 battery cable with large blade connectors to either end of the truck so you can plug it in and the rear cable is long enough to reach the mount on the trailer too. $399 plus taxes and it came with a snatch block and portable mount. I made a slip on "D" ring to fit the 2" tube on the champion so I can chain it to the plow gear if I have to pull from the front....Only had to use it once this winter so far but it did the job with a straight line pull no problem. The warn is 150lbs and it's a heavy ***** to man handle. The Champion weighs 100lbs. I also have a 5yr old champion 2000lb unit on the head board of my dually - works great for a $75 winch and it's had some hard use....Goofy can verify to that...
