Why No Turbo Whistle?

Having a turbo diesel that does not have any turbo whistle is really nagging at me.LOL

As some of you know i recently got a new turbo(new wheels & CHRA), i upgraded my exhaust outlet, got a 3" DP, then 4" from there back with muffler. i am running the factory air box just grabbing nice warm engine bay air.:D

The ONLY time i can hear any hot side whistle is if i have the radio off, all windows up/closed except for the rear slider. then i still have to be listening for it. i can kind of hear a LITTLE around 1500rpm, but then it is gone right away. There is ZERO whistle at idle. The only cold side whistle i get is when the turbo down spools after an upshift.

I know it is not the muffler killing my whistle b/c i have watched vids of other trucks with the SAME turbo/exhaust set-up, including muffler, and they have a nice, noticeable whistle. the vids i have seen with no muffler and same turbo/exhaust just have a much more defined whistle at all rpm's.

Not really a problem just irritatingLOL

Some examples.......

Thanks for any ideas.;Sweet

maybe it's that muffler bearing that is so well greased that keeps the whistle down to a dull roar...;Poke

Would wastegated vs non-wastegated make a difference? Mine whistles, but not that loud (likely caused by smaller diameter pipe and muffler) and no where near that high-pitched.

Yes wastegated vs non gated makes a difference. Wastegated turbo's have smaller exhaust housings and spool much easier than non gated turbo's. Thats the reason for the wastegate, because they are small enough that the engine can actually overspeed the turbo. The wastegate prevents this from happening (in theory).

what little up-pipe leak i still have you can hardly hear. honestly if it wasn't for the fact that i looked at the up-pipe and saw soot i would not know that it was leaking right now.

My turbo whistles very nicely and since my exhaust just broke off at the down pipe it sounds down right mean. It whistles loud enough it hurts my ears sometimes and I am getting tired of it. Now if I could just get it to make power..... This is a stock 093 system. Ron even commented on how nice it whistles with a full exhaust system hooked up.

My cold side blades do have nicks in them which I think helps that.

I was thinking more of Bridge over the river Kwai song they whistle...would be a great tune!

****** had only one left ball....

Gurring has two but they are small....

Himmler has something similar...

And Mussolini has no balls at all....

To the following tune!:rotflmao

Turbo whistling has more to do with what style intake is attached than the exhaust.

Some turbos come equipped with silencer rings that stop the whistle; 1991.5-1993 Dodge/Cummins Holsets for example.

It also has a lot to do with how free the turbine spins and how easily it coasts when no exhaust is driving it.

I relocated my turbo and had to re-clock it.

It hadn't been apart since 1989.

The simple act of knocking it apart, getting rid of a ton of rust-scale, anti-siezing everything, clocking, and re-assembly yielded a nice whistle that I hadn't heard in years. :)
