the open diff is not any weaker, it just applies power to one wheel vs. both wheels with a limited slip or locker.. or i should say an open diff will allow one wheel to spin if it looses traction while a LS or Locker would engage the other drive wheel on that axle.

but the diff is just as strong either way. an open diff will tow just fine on hard surfaces and pavement. both my trucks have open diffs and with good tires they do OK even without engaging 4x4.

Hi in the Cascades, Nearly- Redmond,Oregon
Well I just learned something else today....looked on my door tag...Ax is 45.
Chart says that Conventional non-Positraction Differential =OPEN! I couldn't for sure tell if the chart covers my '90????
Earliest I could see on the chart was '92, or am I wrong, or do it matter??

All these years I thought I had L/S that's finally quit working. It's always done really great in slick stuff with added wt. till last year. Gto to where if I spit on the ground I was stranded!!!!
Maybe there's nothing in there broken to rebuild after-all.

Can L/S be added to Open rearend??? Or do everything have to be changed out?
