what to look for on 1996 PSD zf5 4x4 with 130,000 miles

Could very well be the plugs or uvch.
Can test both.

Yes I was reading up on how to test the plugs with a my multi meter without removing the valve covers, should get a reading of .6 to 2 ohms if they are good. Use the outside pins on the connectors to text resistance correct? I will get to that this weekend.
