What the heck is part 180584601??

Anyone know what the long tube is, that sits between the engine mount and exhaust manifold on the driver's side of the 6.9 engine? It sits parallel to the manifold, is nearly as long as the manifold is, appears to connect to the oil filter housing, and has part number 180584601 stamped on the side.

What is this part, and is it critical to engine function? I'm swapping one of these motors into a different truck, and this piece is interfering with the steering box. I've tried Google and searching the major IHI forums, but I havn't seen any references to it.

Those #'s = Fail but, According to your description you are talking about the oil cooler and yes it's very critical, If you took the engine from a van and are installing it into a truck this part must be changed for a chassis specific cooler.

You must keep that on if you take it off and leave it off you will not have any oil in it and it will blow the motor.

Take a look at EMD_DRIVER's current posting of the
Engine on CraigsList which he just bought.

If you're referring to the long black thing under the exhaust manifold, that is indeed the oil cooler. Look in pictures 3 and 6. You need it in place, or perhaps the truck version of the cooler. It is a necessity.

Thanks guys! The donor vehicle was an F-250, so would it have the 'truck version' of the cooler, or is there another version? Is it possible to switch to a more conventional external oil cooler, like I see on most trucks?

The vehicle being swapped into is my '49 Ford F-5, and the frame rails are narrower enough (compared to the F250) that the extra little space would be nice. I may have found a way make the engine work with the current cooler, but I havn't finished checking clearances...

a oil cooler and exh manifold out of a Eseries. they sit a little narrower than the fseries. Still the oil-to-water cooler is by far more efficient than oil-to-air cooler. this a a item you cannot get around.

Thanks.. I'm pretty happy with it myself (even though it's turned into alot more work than I planned on...)

I'll have to recheck all the clearances on the oil cooler tomorrow, as I think I found a way to keep the oil-to-water setup *crosses fingers* but knowing I have an alternative is a huge relief. The manifold had to go entirely, and I'm either going to just build a log manifold that exits a little higher (the stock manifold exits right where the steering box is) or maybe try for an equal-length header which can be turbo'ed later.

I completely understand! Trying to find the best position with that heavy chunk of metal was the hardest part. :puke:

If you do decide to eliminate it, you'll have to come up with a way to bypass it, not block it off. The oil flow goes straight through it from the oil pump to the oil filter. I don't know if you can block off the water passages, but I'm guess you'd have to connect those too.

That said, I don't know how the engine durability would be affected without it.

Why coudnt you block off boah ports on the engine ,with a steel plate ,thats drilled and taped with a pipe thread then run that through a hose to a remote oil filter and cooler ,GM does it all the time . i have wondered if that would work, but never had any reason to try thanks for listning ED

An oil cooler flow is kinda messed up... The coolant flows from the back to the front. The oil flows from the front to the back. The rear oil cooler header has a bypass in it plus... The oil pressure regulating valve. You can't run the motor without the regulater. The oil pressure will never stop climbing till something blows. So... Now you know there are several passages you need to do something with. The rear header needs to stay part of the motor... But it could be in another location if you can fabricate a block off plate that is ported properly for the oil flow required... Way too much work for me and I like to work on things...:D
