Hey guys,
There was an article on here a couple of months ago about rebuilding 7.3 injectors. I have an old 90, F350 with a na 7.3 and a 99 with a powerstroke. The 99 is a beast when it is running good, the problem is that it has only run good for three months out of the last three years. We bought it used with a 10' dump bed and a tommy gate and we use it to tow our bobcat and to move material. The Injectors started going out the first year and we took it to a local shop where they tore down the motor, inspected everything and replaced the four bad injectors. For about three months the darn thing acted like a drag car, even with the cat behind it and a load in the back. It then started acting like it was starving again and we eventually found out that the chasis cab 7.3s have a set of cigar filters inside the fuel pickup in the tank. Not even one of the darn shops around here told us about this and we unknowingly ran our truck lean for three months and have apparently caused the same problem again because it just does not run right at all now, even though we check those filters at least once a month and replace the fuel filter constantly.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if it is really that hard to rebuild the injectors. I am not looking for a drag or sled truck, but would really be happy to at least get the power the factory had! I have to put it in bulldog just to get it going with a load and it takes a country mile to get to speed. I know it is not a race car, but when it was running right it could pull the bobcat with a couple tons in the back and never even strained!

Any help you guys might have would be greatly appreciated. My business partner is one of those Bowtie guys and I catch crap for loving this truck every day.

Thanks for any help.

and to the rest of your post

there is a sreen on the fuel pickup but there is also a valve for if that screen gets clogged.ive only seen ths happen to one truck.its also there so if the truck gelles up in the winter it will suck ungelled fuel.there is also 2 vents in the top of the front tank that may be cogged.when under the truck, head at rear axle turn themto the passengers side then carefuly pry up on htme to get them out.

Thanks for the help guys. I looked up the info on DIY injectors and that definitely beats ponying up a fortune for new ones. The only question I have is what you lose by stepping up to a single shot 160cc, if anything. I will probably just go for a stock rebuild but was wondering if you could cause damage to the motor by going in with single shots rather than the split shot factory units.

As for the other thread, we found the bypass and the screen but when we took the pickup apart there are actually two tubular filters housed inside the base of the pickup and with a dump body hanging over the fill tube, they get clogged fast!

Thanks

i dont remember what you lose power wise going from splits to singles.but there are guys that have done the switch and liked it.but i think you need a chip burned with programs for the singles to run right but dont quote me on this.

i ran my 95 with a 97 cali motor that had splits with no problem except a rompy idle.
