How often is valve adjustment recomended on the 24v motor?What are the cold setting and those that have adjusted them do you notice any bad outs and at what miles.

We've done several trucks here, and have never found one to be out of spec.
There is an acceptable range of clearance. Some have been close, and usually on the loose side. I think that the worst we've seen was on Steve's truck, a high HP '99 pushing 100k mi., and only a few were near the edge of spec.
Adjustment is a snap to do. A good service manual is helpful.
I can post data later, as my manual is out in the shop, and I'm not there yet.

Factory allowable clearances, per my factory service manual are;

Intake .006 min. - .015 max.

Exhaust .015 min. - .030 max.

Quote "If measured valve lash falls within these specifications, no adjustment/reset is necessary. Engine operation within these ranges has no adverse effect on performance, emissions, fuel economy, or level of engine noise."

Recommended settings when adjustment is required are;

Intake .010

Exhaust .020

All clearances specify below 140F

Remove injector pump gear cover on front gear housing cover. Rotate engine to TDC, aligning mark on gear with TDC indicator mark @ 12 o'clock.
The barring tool makes this easy, avail. from Cummins for about $40.
In this position, check/adjust intake valves 1-2-4, and exhaust valves 1-3-5.
When finished, rotate engine to place mark on inj. pump gear @ 6 o'clock.
In this position, check/adjust intake valves 3-5-6, and exhaust valves 2-4-6.

Be sure to recheck your adjustment after tightening the lock nut.

I have found no spec. on adjustment interval in the manual.

Might be a good idea to put a torque wrench on the rocker shaft bolts while your in there.

I'll bet that I can come up w/a torque spec for that. Gonna have to wait 'til the AM, as I'm away from the manual now. Inside the house and chillin' .

Evenin' all.

Probably fine, but if you are doing injectors it would make no sense to not at least check them while you are in there.

Adjusted mine at 96,000 and most were right on and all were within spec.
