does anyone know the valve to piston clearance for the 6.9? I have the 6.9 service manual supplement and it does not give the specs for that.

I've been told that Typ4 said that you want a minimum of .030" clearance. I believe this goes for either the 6.9 or the 7.3. If it helps, the Fel-Pro head gaskets are .010" thicker than the Victor Reinz. I measured this at both compressed and out of the box thickness.

It's specced as valve recession, and piston protrusion. Stuff you can measure easily.
It's actually hard to measure valve-to-piston clearance - not only do you need to assemble the head on the block, but you have to take into account the hydraulic lifters(which will take up the slack, and be at part lift with the engine running). Without an adjustable "solid" lifter for manually taking up the slack, you can't really do the job.
