typ4 cam installation

You can reach in thru the cam gear to get at the 2 bolts thats holding the cam thrust plate in the engine. That plate holds the cam in the block. they are either 7/16 or 1/2 inch hex head bolts. Remove those and the complete cam and thrust and gear come out as one piece. Then its seperating the parts so they can be installed on the new cam. If you have nothing to remove the cam gear and parts this might be the best way to take the comlete cam to a machinst and have them remove and install parts.

Yep do that. I was able to pull all the stuff off the cam, but I had trouble pressing the stuff back on. I was using worn-out tools and ended up blurring the end of my cam. I took it to a machine shop that we use at work and he was able to clean it up and press back together. Bolts Gary is talking about are 1/2inch.

To do your cam you will probably have to pull off your hood and radiator assembly. I dont think there is enough room to get your cam out in the truck with all that wrong, but I may be wrong.

I know every cam I have done in an IH chassis the cooling pack and hood came off. Those where all DT's though

the entire front of the truck will be comming off... as well as everything on top (obviously)... that's why i figured i'd do the cam. I'll take it to a machinist to press everything on/off

I could be wrong, but I think a simpler puller would take the gear off, and then maybe some lube, and a dead blow hammer would reinstall it. I could be wrong though, I have never done it on an idi, I know that the DT's work like that though. Push came to shove, you could preheat the gear to 250, then press it on.

Simpley pounding the gear on the cam wont work. The best way is to warm up the gear to 250 degrees and press it on.
