I got my hands on a clean looking *** turbo... the problem is I don't know anything about it. There is still a tag on it that I can read, it goes something like this:
***
KHD NR: 2232104
Grosse: 3LEP-229A13.2
ALT-NR: 81 806 0576
AUSF: 5223 970 2270

What I have found with google is that *** has made a model 3LEP 229A but no other numbers as far as what it does. It does look like it was run on a diesel, there is no waste gate on it.

It is a good size, and I was sorta thinking of trying a remote mount setup with it (just for the fun of it)

Some sizes I measured from it.
Air in: 2 1/2" (narrows down a bit smaller)
Air out: 1 1/2"

Exhaust In (it's a rectangle): 2 3/8" x 1 7/8"
Exhaust Out: 3"

Do you think I am wasting my time playing with it?

I was expecting a cone shaped intake hat LOL . Sorry, being a "****" myself, I couldn't resist either. I agree though, doesn't look so clean. Are the inards in good shape?

OK, OK, OK, so maybe clean was not the right word....
It's been sitting outside under cover, so no direct rain, but moist air. So it's got a little surface corrosion. Other then that, it looks good. Nothing in the inside, the turbine and inner housing is clean! There seems to be no play in the shaft at all that I can see or feel.

pour some penetrating oil in the oil in port--let soak a bit--then turn the shaft--does it get loose then??? if not--might be ok--but you realize these were for 2 liter engines??? so got to stay around that size--or performance will suffer--also--if you do go to use it--id still put new seals in it--industrial injectio0n out of salt lake city carrys parts---

I will give that a try, the shaft turns freely right now, and spins for a bit with a good twist.
It looks much bigger then the one that I had on a 2.2 liter gasser engine, hence the thought about it working on the truck. Just wondering how you decoded the fact that it was for a 2 liter engine, so I know when I am looking at then in the future.

that turbo looks like a t series , i would get the compressor housing off and measure the wheel. turbonetics website has some charts to tell what trim it is by diameter. What is the a/r ratio on the turbine housing?

i dont know that for sure--but could tell if it was in my hands--just by looking at the inlet and outlet sizes--wonder if they used ***'s on the mercedes 5 cyls--that would be a bigger turbo--but still not big enough for a 6.9 or a 7.3--
