turbo elbow ATS or make one?

Okay since my truck is in pieces while I'm getting it painted, I was thinking of trying to fab a elbow off of my turbo so I could run a 3" down pipe. Is there a reason you can't make your own? Iv'e never had this elbow off though I'm not sure what the flange looks like but Why could'nt you use steel to make this? Maybe there is something I'm missing. Any reasons somebody has why this can't be done?

On my ATS there is no flange. Its a slip fit with a piston ring type seal. There's nothing to attatch a different pipe to on the turbo side. Maybe a different housing would allow it. I'm speaking of my own non waste gated version.

You know, I never even thought of doing that, I have a waste gated housing on mine so it's a little more difficult, that being said...now my wheels are turning....doh! Just when I had it all worked out someone has to throw a spanner in the gears and muck it all up one more time.

Like I said I've never has the elbow off to see how it actually seals to the turbo or if it just bolts right to it with a gasket. But if the flange is flat I was going to cut my flange and match the bolt patterns and weld a elbow on it that will allow 3" to slide in it. If the flange was flat I was going to use a sheet of thin copper and cut me a gasket out of that for the flange gasket. If that is possible. I had extra time at work today and my mind was thinking of these crazy things. what do you guys think?

silly question....
are you factory turbo or aftermarket?
big difference in how the outlet pipe mounts up.

I've never looked at early factory set-up except from topside, but on my aftermarket nongated ATS it's just a slip fitting into housing.
I managed to go below in downpipe & "shadetree" adapt to 3 1/2" & get my US Gear exhaust brake squeezed into that downpipe section. Tight, & big hammers & dirty words, but I prevailed.

I'm in the same boat right now. I've got the factory turbo, with the smaller flanged outlet housing, and as far as I know, you can't buy the flanged pipe anymore, you can only get the slip fit one (3") from ATS, so you gotta buy the larger outlet housing to go with it. I"m looking at buying one right now...

I faintly recall some guy who somehow cut off the flange and welded up something to fit it, but I don't weld cast, and other than that I don't see how it could be done....

Actually a fellow who heads up the turbo division of BD mentioned he thought he could get 3" Turbo outlets direct from Garrett. I have emailed him and I am waiting on a response. I made sure he was not talking about the ATS and he assured me no it was direct from Garret. Lets wait n see.....Hmmmm bulk order of 3" outlets...


If you are realy going to make up a 3" outlet you may as well try to add an exhaust brake into your design while your at it eh!

Damn times 10! jeeezzzzz!
My image'll drop 30 points to fess-up to this!
But no wonder my pyro can jump to 1250degF so quick. Went & looked at my '90 nongated ATS & my pyro is in INLET casting & for some reason all these years I been thinking it was in OUTLET exhaust! And I've had it off & held in my hot-little-hands 8-10 times looking it all over thru the years!!

Terminology: And it just clicked that the "snail shell" is my ATS turbo casting, not the intake manifold inlet air thingie....& that that intake manifold thingie is the swirl chamber!!!! Or am I still screwed up on terminology?? I've got a ATS foldup diagram exploded view round here somewhere....I should read it sometime instead of looking at the pics!

I guess I need to find a newer set-up to look at live, but to understand for now....
so last pic with turbo, am I looking at outlet or inlet? Outlet, right?

in the pics the 2 elbows, to me both looks near identical except flanges, 1 male, 1female flanged, as well as bolt pattern looks same & bolt up same spot. And both look to have "gate valve" in them.
What am I seeing, missing, or what.

I have the stock turbo on it. I just wasn't sure even if I could fab one up out of steel, would it hold up with the heat. I do not think it would be a problem but I'm no metal specialist. They must use cast for a reason? I was also just going to make some kind of slip fit for mine too, just trying to imagine how to hold it in place and make sure it seals with no leaks. My buddy is a cnc machinist so if get into a bind I'll just rely on him. He just does not know that yet. But this was just an idea I had in my head and didn't know if anybody else tried this.

As far as I know the elbow only fits the factory turbos from late 92 to 94.

Yep that hole is for the wastegate.

The 2 elbows look identical except for the flanges. They even have the same casting numbers on them. In my opinion it would be very easy to cut the end off of the old elbow and weld on a bigger pipe. If I had known this I might have tried it my self. Here are some pictures of what the stock downpipe looks like next to the ATS pipe.

Zigg I'll bet you could bend up a small size downpipe if you really want to...but the 3" pipe is a better idea.
