Tuning IP to stock

Hey folks,
First post here and thankful for such a great resource. I have read lots of IP threads on tuning up, and one on down, but still had a question.

I've owned two IDI"s previously one a turbo that ran WVO, one a NA that was past its prime.

I am about to buy a project truck that is a NA 7.3, with flat tires and a motor with almost no miles. The owner builds engines, and the truck has a fresh engine, IP and injectors. The owner told me that he turned up the pump so it has unburnt fuel coming out the exhaust. Is there an easy way to put it back to the stock setting, and know where that is, or is it just feel what works?

I want to give the truck a going over with new synthetic fluids, big air filter, belts and hoses, etc... and run the IP stock, then get a pyrometer and fiddle with the IP once I have all of the housekeeping stuff taken care of since this truck has been sitting a year and just to see how it changes along the way.

The truck is an extra vehicle, and will mostly be used for fun and not much towing, so MPGs would be my main focus, since I drive like a grandma anyway.

Turn it down a little at a time til there's no smoke.

Because every single pump ever made is unique in it's own way, there is no real such thing as a "stock" setting unless you had a calibration stand. Like Jasper said, just turn it down a flat at a time until you're happy with it.

Turn it down a flat then go for test drive, or are there better indicators while sitting stationary for smoke, etc...?

Welcome to the forum. I'm thinking something else is wrong with that pump. If diesel fuel is dripping out the tail pipe then this engine MUST be smoking black the sky all the time. I would replace the pump and be done with that. changing the oil in the engine would be my next big thing. fuel must be diluting the oil too.
