I use 4x4 frequently. Carrier bearing is newish and feels fine.
On my way to town today I started realizing that it usually happens when I switch OD off. OD was on, no whining. So I switch OD off and it immediately started whining. I switched it back on and it didn't immediately stop whining but after a few miles it finally did. This must be why I don't always hear it. I don't always switch OD off but I do somewhat often if there is someone slowing me down on a hill on the way home.
SO...It's definitely transmission related

Only happens with OD OFF. Might be the coast clutch. Tough to tell with out taking it for a test beating. I meant test drive.

I have an appointment tomorrow for a local trans shop to go over it and try to diagnose it. Hopefully they will find the issue and it will be a cheap and easy fix ....No harm in dreaming

Trans shop said there is a bearing right in the center of the trans that is likely shot.

i'd get a second opinion on that. i don't see how a bearing(that is "active" all the time) would only be an issue in a certain gear.

I would normally get a second opinion but I really trust this shop and getting another opinion means more damage to the trans. I can avoid the loud whining if I leave OD on, and they would want to hear it whine .. which means more damage. I need this trans to hang in there for a few.

I had to take the truck in to town today so I arranged for another trans shop to try to diagnose my trans issue. The truck didn't make a peep the whole trip. The trans shop couldn't get it to whine so I tried and wasn't able to either. He did say that in his opinion it is not an issue inside the trans. So now I'm back home wondering what the hell to do.
I just checked the paperwork for my trans.. it was rebuilt in '06. The update for the center bearing was in '95(?) So it might already have the updated design ..
I'm still planning on replacing the trans, but it makes me feel less sure that my issue is with the trans. I just really hope I don't replace it and still have a whine. But I guess at least I'll have a new trans
