truck crane location?

Two ideas. I got my littel HF 1 ton truck crane, and a 2500 lb electric winch.

Was always goign to put it on the flatbed by the backrack, I would shorten it so it wouldnt stick up past the backrack so I can still get it into the shop. Decreases its effective use but, Id rather get into the shop than have more reach.

or thought about a 3 point setup with it sliding into the receiver hitch, quick connector power, and using two clevis or similar mounting points on the rear part of the flat bed.

the 3 point method is ultimate as it gives you way more versatility, very stable, doesnt twist the frame. Disadvatage is, i would only put the crane on when I need it. But realistically, I am driving somewhere, see some nice cut up oak i can use for firewood, I want to take it right then and there, vs driving home the 30 or so miles, rig up, come back.

that beign said..whats the best attachment for picking up logs with a crane? Thinking some kind of hook/jaw with a vice grip style clamp?

What if you make the main post adjustable? Like the end of a engine hoist.

That tool is what im thinking..now just to ge *** cheaper, thats is crazy expensive. Post could be made adjsutable. I could cut the entire lower portion off, its all round, weld a plate to the bottom of the head, and weld in square tube instead. Easier to drill holes through it...but would need to find a loong 5/8 drill bit or or that would allow me to put the pin in through it.

those skidding tongs...i assume they wouldnt be the best for actually lifting logs though? Thinkign maybe some 6 ft slings i have may be the best. I always carry a long prybar with me to help lift the log to slide the sling under

Essentially the same application as your goal. Lift up a log.

I've used a single tong to lift 15' long hardwood 18" logs with a tractor. Figured you Northern boys would've had tongs laying in every barn! Go find a set on craiglsist or a farm auction.

peavey tool and cant hook look nice for lifting the log up to chain/hook it to the crane and lift up!

I've got this one mounted inside in the back of my cargo trailer. It swivels, sure is nice to load things that are heavy.

Reads 12 ton, should be 1/2 ton.

yup thats basicaly what I have.
Do you thing having it up against the backrack is and OK location? Or will I regret the lack of mobility? All I need to do is be able to lift up engines put them on the bed, and logs. If they are longer than 8-9 feet id cut em before loading, but most are aalready about 3-4'
the shorter logs are no problem for the propsed backrack location, longer logs would not work as well. Would have to put it sideways then manually move em lengthwise. If the crane was on the back i could position them anyway i wanted..hmm

hmm if I change the actual boom arm to somethign sturdier, because it is pretty thin stuff the thing shoudl be able to do 1 ton no problem. Winch and jack are rated for that , the base is nice and thick..damn boom is paper thin though. But then again 1/2 ton is 1000 lbs...
But the question is...Can i lift an IDI engine into the bed with it..

I would make it on a back corner or both...able to swap it...take and make a base that the unjt drops into and you cam swivel it around.

Great tk hqve a crane but suckes when you suddenly fine you mounted it on wrong side of truck because hour cargo is in an obscure location ...

Heck four mounts one on each corner.

Pick ip move crane drop into mount...

Just sayin you hqve to open mind to obscure possibilities.
