tralier brake controller wiring help

So I spend all last night redoing all the PO hacked wiring even put a new 7way on get everything hooked up works great with a tester.

Go to work truck sits in snow and wind 8 hours come home warm up the garageclean it up for a trip this weekend and I notice the brake controller is dimmly lit so I hit the button it lights up like its got a load and is applying power what is going on the make my controller think there is a load on the wire?

Its wet under there but I'm pretty sure I got it all sealed up defently 100% better than OP BTW I do 12volt eletrical professionally so I know nothing is hooked up wrong.

I think water just found a way inside somehow any ideas

I have a controller I hooked up, and it does the glow thing but only if the trailer is hooked up.

There is also a warning about not hooking your brake signal wire to the controller directly from the brake switch on a Ford with the rear abs system. I have never figured out why, but I am sure they say that for some reason. Of course I ignored those instructions, and on my 89 the brake control works fine, but on another 89 I get the glow when the trailer is hooked up.

I would pull the wires indiviually loose from the controller and see which one makes the light go out.

Just a silly question here, but before hacking into the harness, did you first see if you had factory tow kit with a plug in setup under the dash for a brake controller and an available plug in harness for the rear?
Factory tow kit will have a plug under the middle of the dash and some extra fuses under the hood for trailer lights , brakes etc, as marked in the manual.

An older draw tite it worker before and was wired back the same just in asafe manor its susposed to have a green light when a trailer is hooked up but now its dim with no trailer I thing the 7 way has water in it shorting it to ground maybe

It has atow package but the PO didn't use it properly so I've tapped into it for tails rt and lf but ran a new tb wire and the controler it hoked straight to brake switch

On that Draw Tite controller you have 4 wires. Red Black Blue White.

Black = B+ Hooked straight to battery thru a 30 amp 12VDC circuit breaker.
White = B- Hooked straight to the battery. Not to frame. Should be a small B- wire to frame on drivers side, hook it there.
Blue = Brake wire to 7-way.
Red = Controller trigger. 92-93 E-series Van--Splice into Light Green/Red tracer wire, if 4-pin connector is not there.
There should be a 4-pin connector directly below the radio under the dash. A harness to splice onto the controller is available from an RV dealer or Ford dealer to plug into the 4-pin connector.

Moisture control. Pack the whole back side of the 7-way receptacle with wheel bearing grease.

I've seen where the white wire (1 strand) B- will short to the blue wire at the 7-way.

If you have the tow package, you really want to use the plug for the brake controller and the trucks proper wiring. If you went in and started tapping wires, make sure that you tapped the trailer light circuit for the 7 pin and not the truck light circuit. truck light circuit will leave you dim at the trailer lights and the plug under the dash will give much better contact and brake power. For some reason the dimwits at Western Hauler missed all teh tow package on my truck when they installed teh bed and direct wired teh brake controller and the boneheads tapped teh trailer lights for the plug into the truck light circuit , when they had all that nice tow package stuff just sitting there waiting to be used Once I rewired it to the proper circuits everything worked great.
