I believe I have just found a difference in these timing gear covers!!!

I ordered a gear cover on fleabay, and it came in.
I cleaned it up, and noticed what appeared to be a flaw in the stamping.
so I set it aside, and thought I cannot use it!
just a bit ago, I found a bran new out of the box gear cover.
purchased that too.

my cover that I am currently running has a completely flat surface.

the last cover, and the cover I just bought, has extra stamping!!@!
look closely around the water pump mounting surface.
***!!
here are pics of the one I just bought. and the one I got previously has the same, but the leaky cover I have... does not have this stamping.

anyone ever run across this?

The timing cover on my 1994 idi (which I just cleaned up and mounted the water pump on) does NOT have that extra stamping on it. I wonder if the NOS cover you purchased is an earlier one and the extra stamping was eliminated later on? Does that tag have a date on it?

If I understand your pic correctly, there is a raised boss that matches the outline of the water pump? I just did the water pump on my 86 and did not notice any raised areas while scraping the gasket. I'm not saying it wasn't there but it seems that would have caught my chisel while scraping.

not sure exactly why this is here, some have them, some don't.

just curious if anyone knows why...

Best answer I can tell you is there is NOT supposed to be a "dent" in this plate where the water pump sits. I really don't see the differances in the pics but I do see the original plate "dent".

when the new cover gets here ill post up some more pics. but there is definitely 2 styles.
these "dents" I speak of are on 2 different covers. and my other 2 does not have them.

could be to strengthen the steel where it needs it, most likely, where im leaking.

I lightly hit it with some 120 grit on the DA sander to show you high and low spots.
This cover is bran new, and has never been installed.
