Ticking/clacking noise!?!?

what I would try, is first, loosening injector lines one by one to see if that changes the noise or makes it go away. Then I'd pull the valve covers and look for play in my valve train. (from the little info you posted, that sounds like you have a flat lifter, loose rocker, or bad valveguide)

We need more information....like the age of your fuel injection system, if noise is evident when engine is cold/hot or both, what color exhaust smoke if any, things like that.

Probably what Wyreth said, rockers, lifters or valve guide. But usualy you would notice an increase in noise over a period of time. Is that the case?

IMO, the lifters tend to get dirty and/or wear out faster than rocker, pushrod, or valve guide complications.

Check oil level. I had a lifter/rocker arm click that developed after going 2 quarts low. If oil is OK, find location of noise by process of elimination. Crack injector lines, as previously stated. If not injectors, put a long screwdriver on the valve cover and your ear on the end of the handle. It will act like a stethoscope and let you know if there is a rocker problem (a stethoscope is fine, too).

A rod knock and an engine ticking noise are very distinct noises. If it is diagnosed as a rod knock, I would tear into it asap if you could. But if it is an engine tick like mine currently has, it is probably just a worn out lifter or two and there would be no need to put in another engine for that in my opinion.
