Hey guys I just got my 86, 6.9 and it got a banks turbo. Just wondering if I can get some more bost outa the turbo its only puttin out around 5-8 psi.

Sounds about right, especially considering your altitude. Air is starting to get a bit thin to start with there.
You can turn the fuel up a flat and see, but better have a pyrometer on there first to make sure you don't start cooking things. Only problem with turning the fuel up is if you head up into the mountains from there, you might run into an overfueling problem where you are just billowing smoke and not going anywhere. I don't know how often you head over the high mountain passes, but that's something to consider, if you do at all, probably best leaving it where it is. A better cold air intake will help get some more air in like a Hypermax cowl induction

If I were you, I would turn up your fuel. Your motor can handle 12-13 psi max without headstuds. But I say go for it!! It is all up to you and what you want in your trucks performance.

When I got the turbo installed on my truck, I could spool to 7psi right before the shift (C6 automatic) and maintain 5psi after the shift. Turned my pump up two flats, and now it's nothing to hit 9psi before the shift and maintain an easy 7psi after it through all the gears (which I only have three...

what is the elevation there? as RLDSL mentioned, if you turn the fuel up too much the higher elevation and inturn thinner air will be overtaken but the amount of air that would have been just fine at lower elevation. can't you adjust the wastegate on the banks kits.

Not sure how to adjust the wastegate but the previous owner said he had the pump adjusted but I am not sure how much. I have an exhaust temp gauge but I am not sure its working properly. Is there any way to tell if the pump is already turned up?

not much only when i get on it real bad. I want it to smoke more....And I also want to put some stacks on it, do you know of any good kits.

grand rock makes good kits i hear, a lot of people build their own systems, i will be when i get the money. black smoke is wasted fuel so as long as you dont want bad milage, you dont want a bunch of black smoke. if it is an adjustable wastegate it will have a jam nut on the rod

i guess i was asuming that we all knew that in a perfict situation black smoke=higher egts. how could he test his pyro?
We need more info on why he thinks it isn't working. Black smoke is unburned fuel, and of course there is a corrilation to EGT's, but he's complaining about boost. If his manifold EGT's are only 800, then he's run out of fuel. The smoke could be timing related. If he's "driving by the pyro" then the lack of air is a greater concern.

I think the pyro meter is broken because it never reads over 200????

Its probably not broken but disconnected some way. Check out all the electrical connections before you give up on it. Yes... At 200 degrees its telling you something is wrong. Can you watch it raise up any from a cold startup to 200 degrees or does the needle never seem to move from 200 degrees.

it rises to 200 but never goes any higher. I want to turn up my ip but need to fix that first. The original owner said he had the ip turned up but not sure if he did or not. Is there any way to tell?
