Thermocouple install question

I'm getting ready to go out and drill the manifold. My question is, do you install the thermocouple directly into the manifold or are you drilling out for a big ass npt brass fitting and then screw the probe into that?

I've been searching all morning and can't find a clear answer.

Drilled and tapped my manifold for the thermocoupler itself.
