strange noise today

Mine's a 86 stock 6.9 and just today it made the strangest noise. Thumping pooping noise at air cleaner. Took it off and could realy hear it then, drove it that way and rather loud under power only. Parked it and rather loud at idle. Shut it off went out 1 hour later and it went away I am thinking CDR valve what do you think help

How many miles are on the engine.... This sounds like a valve guide going bad....

Its got a little over 200 thousand. Would a valve guide just show up suddenly and not happen again after a short shutdown? Ist the first time it ever did this.

check oil low oil will case issues with noises
my oil was below 4 qts once and i heard that

Didn't you learn when you own older vehicles, to check oil more often?

I guess you have to own a Dodge to learn that one
