You might try a mechanic's stethoscope to see if you can find the source of the tick.

Before I pulled the heads on my truck I had a tick and I hoped it was something like a stuck lifter or leaky injector. The oil additive "Kreen" did make a difference in how the engine ran, smoother for sure, but it did not cure my worn exhaust guides. Kreen is made by Kano Labs who also make Kroil and it is a solvent based formula but when used as instructed seems to be okay. Kreen does stink and the full dose is to be done with the vehicle just idling for a long while. Best of luck to ya'.

Edit: If you want a non-solvent based cleaner then I would recommend the one sold by High Performance Lubricants. HPL is a full synthetic formula using esters for a slow cleaning of the engine internals. One nice thing about HPL is that the product is sold in various weights so it will better match the viscosity of your engine oil.
