starter problem

alright, i know im always on here talking about my truck breaking but, heres another truck breaking story

i go to leave work one day and try to turn my truck over, i get the devistating click click. i knew the starter was going to go bad soon i just hoped not so soon. well i pull the thing out, it looks like a newer style idi starter like from a 94, its not the huge kind that come from the factory. well i go and have this thing rebuilt, the guy gives me back my starter. i put it in and hook everything up correctly.(so im assuming) but now the starter gear will not mesh with the flywheel teeth so i take it back out, and bring back to the shop. he shows me the starter my truck should have, some huge looking thing that looks like a small motor, but then compares the starter in my truck to a starter from a 94 7.3 diesel, im not even sure if its idi di or idi turbo but there identical. i put that one in and same effect, teeth dont mesh the starter gear just spins out and hits the flywheel and spins

now my question is what kind of starters can these trucks run? i have a c6 automatic truck also stock flywheel i assume, but my trucks a **** and has had so many owners, who cant even know if its not aftermarket. but any ideas, should i just go and ask to buy the big ass stock starter?

Are you SURE that the starter solenoid on the starter is getting enough juice from the Starter relay on the passenger side fender wall? You might want to replace that starter relay, it's cheap and they do go bad. If the starter you have is not a gear reduction unit by Mitsu, I highly recommend that you bite the bullet and go get one.

order this starter from Autozone...Duralast-offset gear reduction Mitsubishi, part # 16561 , price $129.99 US dollars, core charge = $120.00 USD( so take old one with you), Limited Lifetime Waranty. Even if your old starter is a different brand (mine was an AC Delco ) get the Mitsubushi- Autozone doesn't care. Since you're doing this starter R&R so often you might also want to stick a STUD (longer bolt with head cut off will do) in the top bolt hole so you can hang the starter up there while you're messin' with the bottom bolts. Use tape to hold the top nut in the socket and to hold the socket onto the extension. OkieGringo

turns out the rebuild place rebuilt my starter to a PSD spec, being as it basically was a psd starter, but for the older 6.9 trucks they use a diff gear...i have a factory starter, if it takes a crap on me ill def get the mitsu autozone starter
