I have a noob question here. Is it possible to go from a direct drive starter to a gear reduction starter? Is there any pros and cons to doing this?

if you have the old delco direct, the newer gears are much better lasting,and used less current to kick em over---seem to last longer also--and are DEF a whole lot lighter!!!!!!

Just change it and never look back... You will think someone lit up your truck with a lightening bolt... The gear reduction starters spin the motor so fast you can't count the rpms. Sometimes I can't let go of the key fast enough when my engine lites off. I like the mitsubishi gear reduction starter because it has the bushing in the nose cone... Some starters don'r have the nose cone support...

My starter is pretty good but I like the sounds of those gear reduction starters. Spinning that motor over faster has to help build some compression heat for starting in the winter. The best thing I ever did was going to John Deere to have some 00 gauge cables made up. I want to relocate the batteries down the road in a battery box and shorten the cable up.

the reduction starters do draw less amps, but dont know that they crank faster. those old delco starters really rip.

Rip as in Rest In Peace?. I'll take a gear reduction starter any day over a direct drive. The gear reduction starter will last longer.

I was just at advanced autoparts and that is a Mitsu. The spec sheet with the starter specifically states so.
