Putting the finishing touches on a Baby Moose install along with a host of other work and the truck won't stay running. I am using the Facet Dura-lift pump from Doug and I think this may be my issue but I wanted to ask here first. I haven't finalized how I want to wire it, so for initial start up I just have it fused hot off of the battery, no relay. After purging the system, I started it with the timing marks matching from factory. Truck did not like the settings, idling very rough, and dying shortly thereafter. I clocked the ip toward the passenger side a dime's width, and it sounded much smoother on start up, but only ran for a short while before dying again. I repeated the start ups four more times at the same timing settings with appropriate cool downs for the starter and it ran the same amount of time each round before dying. Each round went the same, good idle, sputtering and losing rpm's, then dying. I am new to diesels, but it seems fairly obvious i am losing fuel after about 20 seconds. The fuel pump is getting the proper power, but i question whether or not it is drawing air from somewhere. It sounds like a pump in a fish tank, not a constant hum. I checked all the fuel connections, no leaks visible. I matched all my connectors to the size of fuel line, 3/8 fuel line and barbed fittings, teflon taped threads.

I am thanking everyone in advance for their insight in helping me solve this. No pressure, but my wife wants to go pick up her horse Thursday evening, so I would really like to solve this tomorrow or Thursday a.m. If not, I guess I will have to negotiate with the war department, but it wouldn't be the first time ;)

If you pull the fuel filter off after it dies...is it full?

And does it fires right back up afterwords or does it take some cranking or bleeding?

I haven't pulled the filter to check, but it always fires up immediately after it dies, which leads me to believe that the filter is full.

Perhaps some clear tygon tubing for the leak-off lines at the top of the filter and the top of the IP would help you see if there's air entrained in the fuel. Pressure gauges (both supply and return lines) might help diagnose it too.

IM thinking your having air in line problems. Try starting it with your ip to injector lines loose. This will let out trapped air.

Btw. Ive always been told diesel and teflon tape dont mix.

Thanks for the heads up about teflon Cincinnati Guy. I have cracked the ip to injector lines open a couple of times, but I suppose there could still be air in there. I will try it again.

Did you change the filter when you installed the pump. Also is the tanks more than 1/4 full. If not they could be pulling air because the pickups have broken off at the 1/4 tank level. Thats a commen issue on these rigs. Can you rev up the engine and keep it running. The idle may be too low to run too.

The filter has less than 1000 miles on it, the tanks are nearly full, and the initial idle on start up sounds perfect. I can push the throttle pedal down and advance the rpm's, but it dies at about the same time as if i left it at idle.

Don't loosen your IP lines once the truck has run. There is no way your pumping air out to your injectors unless your cranking and cranking with no start. Based on your comments, set your pump so that your scribe line on the IP is about 1/4 inch to the left of the one on the gear housing. This may be a bit much, but it would be better to be too advanced than too retarded at this juncture. You can try this also... disconnect the fuel return at the top of the IP, and just connect a clear hose going to a fuel can. plug the line where it connected to the IP and ensure it is sealed. When the fuel pump is on you should see fuel coming out of the pump return into your fuel can. Once it starts, if the engine dies and so does the fuel flow, then you know it is a supply issue.

Stand down, I am a bit slow.

I am slightly retarded possibly. I had a nice breakfast, cleared my mind, and went back out to work on the problem. Turns out the problem was not having the fuel return lines routed correctly. They are properly placed and the truck runs great. Thanks for all the suggestions, too bad you couldn't save me from myself!

:slySometimes we have issues like this. Glad you have it running correctly and... You taught me something about why your engine would run for a moment and then die... I will remember this...:sly

When you say not routed correctly, what exactly does that mean? I'm having similar problems after just replacing a lift pump and there's a pretty good chance I did something dumb - but I thought I did it all by the book, which means I wouldn't be able to identify what it was without some outside help.
