Smokey black truck UPDATE. Screwed up my Rally plans, but still had FUN.

You can have some of it. Fortunately for me, I am only slightly effected by the heat and cold. When I am at work, I have the option of short sleeves or long. During late Dec and early Jan of this year, I was in short sleeves. Temps at night were in the single digits, but when the sun was up, they were close to 20s. So I wear short sleeves. The guys at work think I am C R A Z Y...more so than I actually am...

Yeah but I definately prefer the dry heat here to the humidity and heat down around my hometown around houston. here it has been 100-110 with pretty damn low humidity, down there it will hit 95-100 with 80-90% humidity and you dont work up a sweat breathing you feel like you cant breath because half the air traveling into your lungs is water

When I first bought this truck, I laughed at how a previous owner cut the core support and added brackets to make the top removable. Today I was glad he did it.

I removed the 6 glowplugs that are not blocked by the injector pipes.

They are seriously eroded. Yikes!

Thanks for all the encouragement fellas! Yesterday was bonkers. I sweated so much, I looked like I dove into the pool. I should have.

I am heading back out into the heat wave to see how far I can move this job along. It is only a hundred degrees today.

I need to find and install a pyro this time. My engine abuse and foolishness has led to a lot of work. I do not want to do this job again anytime soon.

You should check to see if your camera has a "macro" setting. It will focus on close up objects much better if you can use that.

Yesterday I got the 7.3 ready to go in. I am swapping the solid oil pan off the 6.9 to the 7.3. When I pulled the oil pan off the 7.3, I found some good stuff. I will take a pic later today so everyone can see what I mean. The rebuilder polished the rod beams and weight matched the rods and pistons. There is evidence of balancing the crank too. Looking at the block, it has not been overbored. Everything in the bottom end is shiney-silver-clean, like it has hardy any miles.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nice acorn once in a while.

Nice going Dave. A week of overtime and freaking crazy heat has brought me to a standstill. I found myself going to bed at 6:30-7:00 at night 104* with a 120* heat index yesterday 2nd hottest day on history for my neck of the woods. Good luck bro.

I did not tear down the red 6.9 yet but I did get the 7.3 in there.

It runs awesome.

I am very pleased that I stuck my neck out to buy the 91' SuperDuty that donated this motor.

Anyway, the truck starts right up and idles very smooth. It shoots out a small black puff upon startup and then runs totally clear. When I let out the clutch in second, the truck just squirts forward without straining. The truck runs clean with no visible emissions, accelerating with authority at 1/2 throttle. The further I step into it, the harder it pulls, with the black smoke starting to fill in around 2/3 throttle and above. It has not used a drop of oil. I love this engine.

I filled up the front tank to the top and by my gps, I drove 148 miles. This included some highway at 55-60mph, towed junkers on the trailer twice and a lot of slow speed joyriding/sightseeing at night around the city (3rd gear 700-800rpm). It took 6.21 gallons.

148/6.21 = 23.8mpg.

I have been driving real easy, trying to time the lights and taking off real easy when I do have to stop. That has a lot to do with the great mileage I am seeing. The old engine gave me around 15, driving the same way, no where near 23! I figure it will probably get 17 or 18 mpg on the highway pushing 75 mph. I have not taken any trips since the engine R&R, so no data on that yet.

I am running a low mileage since rebuilt 1991 7.3 NA, fairly clean 2nd hand air cleaner, factory plastic air intake, factory exhaust minus muffler, exiting at stock location, zf5, 4x4, 4.10, 265/75/16 BFG All Terrains @ 70 psi, front sits pretty low, no cap, factory fan setup. 7400lbs w/driver.

As soon as I get a chance, in the next day or two, I will get that 6.9 torn apart, so stay tuned for the carnage pics.

Glad to hear it, Dave. Always nice to get back behind the wheel like that. Sounds like you have a good engine there so you can take your time building the 6.9 into anything you want whenever you want.
