Smokey black truck UPDATE. Screwed up my Rally plans, but still had FUN.

When I left home for the Rally, the truck did not smoke at idle. It rolled coal above 3/4 throttle, that is about it. But I know it was smoking pretty bad on the way to the timing clinic/dyno day. So somewhere between Cleveland and Suedville, I broke something.

I remember at the timing clinic, Diesel Crawler pulled my oil cap, and there was a large amount of blowby, but it mostly dissapeared when he revved the engine.

Today, I hope to break away from the festivities long enough to pull the rocker covers and look for carnage and/or clues.

80% does not make it smoke THAT much. I run a lot and have not smoked like that since before the rebuild.

Running on 80% WMO

I run 80% in the winter.

I run 85% in the warmer months.

In that pic with all the smoke, I was running all diesel. I was running the front tank since I got off I81 on Friday, which is straight #2 road diesel with a lot of Howes.

I ran 85% wmo the 350 miles from Cleveland to exit 100 on I81.

I ran up to about 50-60% mix of WMO (lots of ATF in there too) and never had smoke problems. It actually seemed to smoke a little less other than cold starts (then it was a bit grouchyLOL).

I was thinking a bad ring too...

Although.......Dave, is that truck turbocharged?

If not, I almost wonder if you merely have a case of bad ring coking? (although I guess it could also be a stuck injector).

I too thought about the injector, but after hearing that it was eating oil, it needs another explination. Lest it is an injector that has backed out or the tip is broken causing it to oil/overfuel the cyl from the head...I actually hope that is his problem so it is a cheaper fix for him.

There is a gap in the compression and blowby with the key off. :rotflmao

I killed one or more of the pistons. Poor engine. I guess I will bore the block and install new pistons, rings, gaskets, main & rod bearings. I am gonna rebuild the heads with back-cut valves, check the guides and flow port those units. The finishing touch will be new bb code injectors. Then, it's "back to the front soldier". LOL

It will be alright I have this strong running 7.3 to drop in there in the meantime. I also have another running 6.9, it just needs pulled.

Remember that one injector that Corey took apart and the tip was sticking because of all the crud inside it?

Yea, that is crud is not helping. I could have a stuck injector. But this motor is still in need of a rebuilding.

I am looking forward to seeing it apart.

So do you have a pyro or not? I am just curious to see if with WMO if the tendency is there to run a higher EGT. If so, we MAY need to keep the temps lower so we do not lunch a ring land. I am pretty sure that is what you have done. Using oil, lots "O" smoke, low compression on one cyl. So...hurry up and get it apart so I can see.:)
